iphone baconegg Bacon and Eggs: Hallowed iPhone ProtectorsWhile most foodstuffs, especially greasy ones, are the bane of touchscreens and mobile tech in general, this modest slice of bacon and lonely egg stand firm between your beloved iPhone and the cruel outside world. Earbuds can enjoy safe passage nestled lovingly under a golden over-easy, while bacon, ever the protector of all things good and right in the world, staunchly holds the top flap shut. Try not to let your ravenous hunger overpower you while admiring this case, however – only a moutful of felt awaits you. Why not use your iPhone to find the closest diner? Pick up your bacon and egg iPhone sleeve for $35.00 from Etsy.

Black and Chrome: the standard for a lot of devices now?

Panasonic DECT handset

The other day I had a bunch of devices on my desk, and in between posts and the like, I glanced across at them – at which point I realised that almost all of them have the same exterior treatment in terms of colour, highlights, and styling.

What do I mean? Well if I told you that there was a BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Bold, iPhone 3G, and Panasonic landline DECT phone (check out the pic) together, maybe you’ll spot the similarities? No? How about this then:

- Piano Black Fascia

- Chromed bezel/outer detailing

In fact when I thought about it, there are an increasing number of devices that seem to come from the same finishing school – not necessarily for their exact looks, but for the treatment applied to appeal to the target market. Thinking a bit further, there are obviously a lot of other brands in other industries that try for the same effect – immediately I thought of the Mont Blanc Pen range – which feature the same black/chromed effort.

Of course some of the slight details do vary – looking across the Blackberry range (which seems to extensively feature this black/chrome treatment), it would appear the exact shade of chrome varies a little.

But the point I am slowly getting to is: could this treatment get to a point where it’s so pervasive on handsets, we are going to lose a lot of the individuality? I would guess the initial goal of a black/chromed finish is an understated look for the business/professional market, but it’s very easy for handset manufacturers to carry this across on to multiple other handsets – even for example the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N95-8GB had hints of this look.

What do the readers think? Do you care so much what colour your devices are, what the finish is around the outside of them, what colour/shade the buttons are? Right now all my devices are beginning to look the same at home……!

The End is Nigh: Windows 95 Crammed onto iPhone

When you start seeing an operating system that’s nearly 15 years old put onto what many consider the greatest phone they’ve ever used, you might call the abomination an omen for The End of Days. Any minute now, we’ll see fire and brimstone coming down from the skies, rivers and seas boiling, fourty years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanoes, the dead rising from the grave, human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria… (Bonus points for naming the quote). Although, considering this is all happening on an emulator, you might still have some time to repent for your sins before Win95 finds its way onto an iPhone proper. The performance right now is pretty shoddy (5-10 minutes to boot up), so we’ll have to wait to see how it fares on the 3GS.

Thanks Na!

Blogger Shunned, Skewered After Busted Rumour

angrymob Blogger Shunned, Skewered After Busted RumourAfter a slow day of news and some twitter chatter between @Videos4BB, @nanpalmero, @ASacco, @azeis, and I, it’s become clear that although The Onion has a fantastic tech section, the world needs more parody around the mobile blogging world. Let’s see what we can do.

Amateur tech blogger Andrew Patowski had recently posted a rumour regarding prominent handset manufacturer, CellCom, moving to a new operating system, but was promptly met with furious denial, both from rabid competition as well as stone-cold company officials.

“This guy is so wrong, it’s stupid. Who even let him on the internet?”, commented one prominent, anonymous blogger who goes solely by the monicker “The Phoninantor”. “He says he’s got a ninja or something giving him the low-down? Well, I’ve got ninjas, barbarians, robots, and hoes in seven area codes that say he’s full of crap.”

Ex-market analyst Geoffrey Rudabaker now writing for Mobile Weekly says, “It’s virtually impossible that CellCom would jump to another OS, according to current market forecasts. Some very smart people have made very pretty graphs that make the situation perfectly clear,” said Rudabaker, pointing to a chart. “As you can see, everything is going up and to the right. That’s what CellCom is doing now. That’s good.” Rudabaker then pointed to another chart demonstrating a downward slope. “This is what would happen if CellCom switched operating systems. That’s bad, therefor CellCom will never make the jump.”

In an effort to fully put a close to the matter, CellCom issued an official statement: “The allegations that CellCom is dropping their tried-and-true operating system are patently false. Clearly anyone who would think that has no place in the industry, and as such, we have petitioned all major conventions and news outlets to blacklist the source of these rumours in the hope that their lies and deceit never again tarnish our good name.” Following the statement, CellCom-branded knights have been sighted on a holy crusade against Patowski and other rumour-mongering bloggers.

When reached for a reaction, Patowski’s embarassment was palpable. “I don’t think I can show my face in the microblogowebothingie ever again,” he said before being impaled by a lance.

canada flag Happy Canada Day... Canada!

Yep, today is the day most Canadians take some time off, BBQ, drink beer and light off fireworks. Canada Day (formerly known as Dominion Day) is the Canadian version of American Independence Day, in which we celebrate the anniversary of the July 1, 1867 enactment of the British North America Act. Long story short, we’re celebrating the birthday of our country. If you’d like to learn more about Canada Day, check out the Canadian Government’s Heritage website. There’s some good info there.

To all of my Canadian family, friends and colleagues, let’s party it up today. But not too hard, most of us have to go back to work tomorrow…… right? :)

Note: The image above should work very nicely as an iPhone wallpaper. Give it a try!

Happy 142nd Birthday Canada!

laser engraved palm pre Just for Fun: The Laser Engraved Palm Pre

There’s no doubting that my bud Phil over at PreThinking is in love with his Palm Pre. I always knew it, but this latest exploit simply confirms it. After Phil picked up the matte Touchstone battery door, his glossy cover was of no use to him. To his delight, a reader (@spckeishou) stepped up and offered laser engraving services via the Sprint (NYSE: S) Studio he happens to work at. The rest, as they say, is history.

The results and even a video are all available after the jump >

A Case for a Thicker BlackBerry: David Fitzherbert’s Story

david fitzherbert A Case for a Thicker BlackBerry: David Fitzherberts StoryBritish Skier David Fitzherbert was doing some skiing off-trail in the Matterhorn and Monterosa peaks in Switzerland when something terrible happened. The snow gave way beneath him, and he plummeted some 70 feet into a crevasse.

“The snow gave way beneath me and I fell down a very deep crevasse. After 70 feet it narrowed and I became stuck like a cork in a bottle between the walls. Fortunately the extra inches of the Blackberry (NSDQ: RIMM) were enough to block the fall.”

David broke his jaw, some teeth, his nose and a bone in his chest… But his BlackBerry was still working well enough to use. While in hospital he used it to message his wife that he was still alive.

I always thought that a thin device was more optimal. Next time I go skiing I’m packing the trusty old BlackBerry 8700 in my jacket pocket… Just in case :)

My fave Michael Jackson Choons playing on my iPhone…

By Ben Robinson on Friday, June 26th, 2009 at 4:47 PM PST
In Multimedia, Random

Whilst writing some posts this evening/early morning, I have been listening to music – like most of the IntoMobile team when they are writing I think!

Of course, with recent events, Michael Jackson is at the front of many peoples’ minds, and I’m no exception – the man brought some amazing music that crossed boundaries, defied genres, and enriched our lives. So here, whilst I am posting, are my top 10 MJ tracks – ranked in descending order:

10: Jam (another MJ – Michael Jordan – in the video. Heavy D on rap duties!)

9: In The Closet (Naomi Campbell in video. Nuff said)

8: Who Is It (bad-ass percussion on this)

7: You Rock My World (Darkchild is a legendary producer)

6: Stranger in Moscow (underrated track – great Todd Terry remixes….)

5: Human Nature (incredibly delicate track, but superb instrumentation)

4: Billie Jean (one of the best intros to a track ever…)

3: Smooth Criminal (awesome, even if just for the Alien Ant Farm cover years later!)

2: Beat It (talk about an another awesome intro, and some hard pop lyrics!)

1: Thriller (had to be, didn’t it – but listen to the instrumentation on it, amazing for the time – and interpolated cleverly by Prodigy years later on ‘The Way It Is’ – check it out if you have 5…)

Of course, everyone has their own Top 10 – post yours in the comments below (you can get the full singles discography here at Wikipedia).

Steal a phone in Somalia, get your right hand and left foot chopped off

voa hussein somalia amputations 210 25jun09 Steal a phone in Somalia, get your right hand and left foot chopped offStealing someone’s mobile phone makes you a dick. Stealing someone’s mobile phone in Somalia is an easy way to lose a few pounds, easy because you’ll be living the rest of your life without your right hand and left foot. At an al-Shabab camp, just north of Mogadishu, four men (pictured right) who have been sentenced for stealing mobile phones, and weapons, were forced to wear masks over their faces while a machete removed two appendages, all the while a crowd was watching.

Moral of the story: If you want an iPhone, save up your pennies.
