Fragmentation still plagues Android – only 1% of all devices have ICS 4.0

Well, the numbers are in for the different types of Android versions running on all devices, and the results are disappointing because it shows that fragmentation isn’t going anywhere. First, Google released data (below) that showed 60 percent of users are running some sort of version of Gingerbread, and only 1 percent of users were operating on Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). A new survey from Velti provides some trends to expect for the upcoming Super Bowl and your mobile phone. CCMI: Roaming costs contribute to lost business in 1 of 4 Fortune 1000 companies

According to a research from CCMI, a majority of Fortune 1000 companies are pursuing alternatives to control the exorbitant wireless bills incurred when employees do business internationally. Here’s what the report, commissioned by Truphone, reveals: 40% of companies are forbidding or curtailing business usage of wireless devices while abroad to help manage costs. 24% said that they have lost business as a result of roaming costs. BlackBerry owners are older, wealthier

Surprise, surprise … BlackBerry owners are older and wealthier, according to the latest study conducted by comScore. The study shows that BlackBerry smartphones are occupied of age groups ranging from 35 and above, while folks who are 55 to 64 years of age have the highest ownership index. Owners of BB devices are wealthier, as the report found they bring in an annual household income of $75,000 and above when compared to the average smartphone user. Android’s tablet market share rises to 39 percent in Q4 2011

We know that the strategy ultimately ensures success in some ways but we’re still surprised with the number of Android tablets in the world. Distimo: Being featured on Android Market boosts business

Distimo, an analytics provider, has come out with its latest report and it has some interesting facts about what happens when mobile apps go on sale. Juniper Research: Ultrabooks growth more than triple that of tablets over next 5 years

Think tablets are selling like hot cupcakes? Check out Ultrabooks, those super-thin laptops that look like the MacBook Air. According to Juniper Research, shipments of these devices will grow at three times the rate of tablets over the next five years. However, tablets volume will remain higher, with 253 million shipped in 2016, compared with 178 million Ultrabooks. Apple becomes largest purchaser of semiconductors on the planet

Apple gains another notch on its belt by becoming the largest chip (semiconductor) purchaser in the world, beating out Samsung for the top spot, according to data from Gartner. The Cupertino-based company spent $17.3 billion on semiconductors in 2011, which catapulted it up to a 5.7 percent total share of chip purchasing. Rounding out last years top three chip buyers is: Samsung at $16.7 billion and HP with $16.6 billion (both holding a 5.5 percent share). We all know Personal Navigation Devices (PNDs) are dying rapidly with many modern smartphones offering great navigation experience out of box. Economic hardship won’t affect mobile banking with Juniper Research predicting customers will flock to such services in volumes, eventually reaching 530 million users by 2013, up from 300 million in 2011.
