The good news: Shazam, the popular music service that allows you to identify a song by holding your device up to a speaker for a few seconds, has released a premium version of their iPhone application called “Shazam Encore” [iTunes link]. For 5 USD (or 4 EUR or 3 GBP) you get: faster song recognition, the ability to see where you where when you identified a song, music recommendations based on the songs you looked up, find out which songs are being identified the most, and a car mode that helps you identify what’s playing on the radio.

“Since our launch on the App Store, Shazam has achieved a huge following with iPhone and iPod touch users and is now one of the most popular music apps in the world,” said Andrew Fisher, CEO of Shazam. “We have listened to our iPhone and iPod touch users and have created a new app which answers their requests to take them on an enhanced music journey that will change the way music lovers experience and learn about music.”

The bad news: New users of Shazam deciding to use the free verison will be limited to only 5 uses of the Shazam service per month.

On the heels of its recent iPhone app update, Remember The Milk updated its Android application adding some cool new features to the mix. Here’s what’s changed in the version 1.1.0 (codename “Bender”):

• Widget customization – you can now choose between two different sizes (2×2 and 3×3) and customize what the widget shows: tasks due today, all tasks, or tasks from a specific list (Smart Lists, included).

They’ve released a dedicated application in the AppStore simply called Medallia for iPhone, bringing customer experience and enterprise feedback management to the palm (NSDQ: PALM) of a hand. The application is free to all subscribers of Medallia’s Enterprise Feedback Management Platform and it works with all iPhone models.

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) and Best Buy have announced a partnership whereby Best Buy employees will offer to install the Google Mobile Application for customers purchasing mobile phones from a retail Best Buy store. It wasn’t mentioned how much money Best Buy would receive from Google, but rumored estimates range from “I’m going to leave my job and order a trophy wife from Russia” to “I’m rich, bitch”.

Best Buy Mobile announced a retail partnership with Google that will bring Google Mobile App to consumers. Best Buy is the first retailer in the U.S. to work with Google to distribute Google Mobile App on smartphones sold in-store.

“We know that consumers want smartphones and, increasingly, they want to use applications,” said Scott Moore, VP of Marketing for Best Buy Mobile. “The challenge is that people still need help understanding what is available to them and how they can bring it to life on their device. This partnership between Best Buy and Google serves that role and will go a long way in bringing applications to more consumers regardless of what device, carrier or platform they use.”

Google Mobile App features include:

• One-click access to Google – search Google without having to navigate to the internet
• Search by voice – speak your query in plain English
• My Location – search for local businesses without having to type your current location
• Google Suggest – search for suggested queries and businesses that appear as you type
• Links to other Google apps including Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube

Google will announce this additional method of getting Google Mobile App on its Mobile Blog (http://googlemobile.blogspot.com) and will provide more information on a new web site, (http://www.google.com/bestbuymobile), scheduled to launch November 9.

“This relationship is an opportunity for both Google and Best Buy Mobile to provide consumers with better access to innovative applications like Google Mobile App,” said Moore. “Going beyond simply selling mobile phones, working with ground-breaking companies like Google allows Best Buy Mobile to improve the buying experience and deliver against its customer promise of being there through the life of the phone.”

Bell busted out their fresh HSPA devices yesterday, and today we  have a similar official announcement from telus (NYSE: TU). Earlier this week, we had a chance to sit down and take a look at the new toys; most of the players you’ll already be familiar with, but here’s a rundown of telus‘ take on each one.

First up we have the Hero, HTC’s Android avenger, jam-packed with their custom Sense user interface. I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t packaged in Sprint (NYSE: S)’s slick, smooth, curve casing, but telus apparently wanted to capture the European flavour by offering something unique to North America, although it’s arguably reminiscent of Rogers (NYSE: RCI)’ HTC Dream in terms of aesthetic. Prodding a little bit about other Android hardware in the future, telussaid that they’re really not interested in vanilla builds – they really want to see some unique experiences with each manufacturer, and I couldn’t agree more. If you’re hoping to see the Hero on another carrier up north, good luck; telus said they’ve nabbed the Canadian exclusive on the Hero, and it sounded indefinite. The price point is also killer: $99.99 on contract, $499.99 off contract.

Next is the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Bold 9700. You’ve seen our first impressions, and they’re mostly good, though it’s still a pretty predictable iteration on a proven formula. RIM has been making a point to say that their Wi-Fi is UMA capable, allowing for calls over your local wireless internet connection, assuming your cellular service provider has a supporting plan. I took the opportunity to prod telus about supporting UMA, and they said they’re continually evaluating options, but don’t expect UMA before the holidays. Things sounded doubtful in general though, so don’t hold your breath. The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is available on telus for $249.99 on contract, or $649.99 with no strings attached.

Then there was the LG BL40, a ridonkulously widescreen device. I hadn’t spent much time with with LG’s S-Class 3D user interface, but the cube-spinning was kind of cool. The real wow factor was that telus was claiming a North American exclusive on the device. The original Chocolate did pretty well for itself, and I trust that the new one on telus will be equally successful. You’ll be able to pick up the New Chocolate for $79.99 on a three-year contract, or $249.99 without.

Finally, there’s the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) E71. There wasn’t much to ask about it, since it’s made the rounds by this point, but considering Rogers recently announced the N86 with 8 megapixel camera, I think telus is going to have some catching up to do when it comes to their high-end Nokia handsets. Still, the E71 is a great handset, and it’s available for $29.99 on contract, or $329.99 without.  Red/white version is also available, apparently.

Oh, then there’s the iPhone, but they didn’t have one there for some reason. Maybe they think everyone already has heard enough about the damn thing. I’m tempted to agree. The telus 32 GB iPhone 3GS will run you $299 on contract, $799 otherwise.

We also got some numbers on the new Clear and Simple pricing, which cuts the system access fee and 911. Here’s a quick rundown of the smartphone plans, which all includes voicemail, call waiting, and conference calling:

• $50/month: 100 local anytime minutes; 50 bonus anytime minutes; and choice between 5 local favourites or 1,000 outgoing and unlimited incoming SMS or double anytime minutes; unlimited nights and weekends; 500 MB data
• $65/month: 200 local anytime minutes; 50 bonus anytime minutes; and choice between 5 nationwide favourites or unlimited incoming SMS or double anytime minutes; unlimited nights and weekends; 1 GB data
• $80/month: 350 local anytime minutes; 50 bonus anytime minutes; and choice between 5 nationwide favourites or unlimited incoming SMS or double anytime minutes; unlimited nights and weekends; 2 GB data
• $100/month: 450 local anytime minutes; 50 bonus anytime minutes; and choice between 5 favourites or unlimited incoming SMS or double anytime minutes; unlimited nights and weekends; 3 GB data

Devices and plans aside, we talked about the HSPA rollout itself. Everything was built right on top of their existing EVDO network, so everything completely overlaps. The situation in the prairies still sounds somewhat sketchy, however – a roaming agreement with Sasktel is getting finalized, but the Manitoba network is still under construction. In terms of future hardware selection, telus will be pushing HSPA for the first little while, but they won’t be abandoning their EVDO network; it’s inaccurate to think that Bell and telus are swapping out CDMA for GSM, since they’re really just piling one on top of the other. It’s also kind of interesting that the HSPA handsets will have no 2G connectivity, which makes me a little scared – it’s always been somewhat reassuring that on Rogers I could fall back on an EDGE connection if 3G coverage was hurting. HSPA does have its benefits, though, like simultaneous data and voice transmission; missing calls while tethering shouldn’t be a problem.

I also asked about the telus Black’s Photography acquisition, which is seeing a proper retail presence today. I was a little worried that employees in a camera store would know jack-all about selling phones, but telus was likening the situation to Best Buy in that they’re as trained as they need to be to sell phones. It will be interesting to see what kind of perspective those salespeople offer on phones with higher-end cameras, though.

The whole lot of handsets are available today, but if you’re excited for these phones, telus showed us a few others that will be worth sticking around to hear about. One in particular we’ll probably be seeing Monday…  For more information, check out telus‘ HSPA landing page.

Mobile payments company Billing Revolution announced that it now has a status as a Mobile Commerce Partner with PayPal, enabling PayPal merchants to conduct mobile credit card transactions using their existing PayPal Payflow Pro gateway accounts.

There are roughly 45,000 merchants that process transactions via PayPal Payflow gateway, and all of them now have the ability to sell their stuff to consumers on a mobile phone — although it’s unclear just how many of them will sign-up for the service.

And that’s about all we got to share regarding this news. Plus there’s the quote from Andy Kleitsch, CEO of Billing Revolution, who said: “Enabling mobile transactions for all PayPal merchants represents a strategic step forward for Billing Revolution. PayPal merchants wishing to conduct mobile credit card transactions can now safely and easily use Billing Revolution to process transactions through their existing PayPal accounts.”

Now we only have to see whether merchants will show interest and actually start implementing the new mobile payment feature. We certainly hope they’ll jump on board…

Here’s another example of great use of mobile technology for good. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has launched a mobile food voucher pilot project to aid 1,000 Iraqi refugee families in Syria.

Here’s how it works (from the press release):

Iraqi refugees living in Damascus will receive a text message on their mobiles providing a code enabling them to cash in all or part of the “virtual voucher” at selected government shops. They will be able to exchange their electronic vouchers for rice, wheat flour, lentils, chickpeas, oil and canned fish, as well as cheese and eggs — items that cannot usually be included in conventional aid baskets.

Each family will receive one voucher per person, worth US$22 every two months. After each transaction, families will receive an updated balance, also sent by SMS to their mobile numbers.

Apparently this is the first time mobiles have been used to deliver food vouchers, and we applaud UN for pulling this out. The project was developed in collaboration with Syria’s General Establishment for Storing and Marketing Agriculture and Animal Products (GESMAAP), and mobile operator MTN, which donated SIM cards…

Facebook’s mobile site and mobile applications have been very well received by social network addicts around the world, which makes you wonder why the guy in charge of it all, Jed Stremel, resigned? After 4 years with the company he probably realized that Facebook is nothing more than a useless time suck creating a false sense of companionship while doubling as a playground with a barbed wire perimeter that you’re forced to live in for the rest of your life. That or he is just tired of working with people half his age, his shares have vested, and now he can go look for work at a company that is actually doing something useful.

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has updated the web-based version of GMail for iPhone. The update is simple (yet useful) – GMail now features auto-expanding compose box.

If you’ve been using web-based GMail on your iPhone/iPod Touch, you’ve certainly noticed that compose box doesn’t scroll to show you the complete message. On Android-powered devices there’s a trackball or a D-pad (new Moto devices) which you can use to scroll through your message. But that’s not the case with the iPhone, hence Google tweaked the code and voila… now you can flick to scroll the message box.

It’s good to see Google constantly adding tweaks here and there to its popular email service. Hopefully, they’ll soon update it even more to better sing along the upcoming WVGA touchscreen-equipped Android devices.

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has updated the Bing mobile website, located at m.bing.com. Here’s what’s new:

• NFL feature – type a team or player and see upcoming games, stats, and scores. While the game is on, you can get real-time updates on the plays. (U.S. only)
• Flight status – enter the airline and flight number to get the latest departure and landing times.
• Support for touch-enabled devices – mobile website can detect high-end devices and show a better and touch-friendlier version of the site. A new Movies feature is also included, allowing “Search for Movies” in your city, showtimes, overviews, and even trailers and video clips. Supported devices include the iPhone, Zune HD, T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) G1, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Imagio, Samsung Omnia, with more devices to get supported over the next couple of months.

And that’s about it. It’s nice to see Microsoft pushing its search engine forward…

bCODE MediaPlane 220

Provider of mobile wallet scanning platforms bCODE is teaming up cinema innovator Screenvision and Sprint (NYSE: S) to create the world’s largest mobile coupon redemption network. Under the deal, bCODE will provide its SMS-based secure scanning mobile wallet platform, and Sprint will market the service to its customers who will be able to receive special concession stand savings via mobile couponing in 500 participating movie theaters in Screenvision’s nationwide network.

The service is already available in more than 50 DMAs across the country — including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Houston and Dallas. In early 2010, more than 900 theaters will have bCODE service available.

As for how it works, here’s an excerpt from the press release:

The bCODE service consists of mobile coupon delivery and an interactive touch-screen mobile marketing device. A bCODE is a secure and encrypted text message (SMS) that can be scanned easily. The bCODE message is the result of a proprietary algorithm transmitted across technology that’s standard in more than 99.7 percent of the world’s mobile phones. Consumers receive bCODE text message incentives and offers on their mobile phone that they can then redeem at a MediaPlane. Those of you who were getting comfortable with the breadth of Sprint (NYSE: S)’s Simply Everything plan and partaking in the odd smartphone tethering will be in for a rude interruption.  Some heated discussion on the Sprint forums has revealed that phone as modem service is no longer available for Simply Everything customers, although a Sprint employee vehemently defends the decision, saying that PAM has always been an add-on, and anyone tethering up until now was doing so outside the purview of their contract. Sprint VP David Owens has confirmed the change and that there won’t be a PAM add-on available for Simply Everything any time soon. There are always workarounds, like My Tether for the Pre, and TetherBerry for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM), but that’s more work than a lot of users would like to put in; clearly Sprint is more interested in hawking their mobile broadband access through WiMAX routers. It’s disappointing news for many customers, but it’s hard to blame Sprint for pushing 4G.

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) just posted an entry to their N-Gage blog saying that the N-Gage publishing platform is going to die in less than a year. Games will now be sold through the Ovi Store, which on face value makes sense, giving consumers a single location to purchase applications, whether that be a new alarm clock, or Super Monkey Ball, but all the community features that many of you have come to love will be gone. Stuff like high scores, messaging, and keeping up with your friends in the N-Gage Arena, that stuff is gone.

Even though mobile applications existed for 10 years now, it was Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) which brought the hype to the industry. And now we have a new service, actually social network, dedicated to those people who really (and I mean *really*) love their apps.

The service is called Appboy and it’s apparently made for both developers and end users. Various platforms are present (not just the iPhone), and you can comment and rate apps, as well as create your own little app store and eventually earn a 5% commission. Furthermore, developers can ask the end users for some idea input – what would they like to see developed next, or which feature is missing from their software. This, of course, is in addition to actual promotion of the application.

And that’s about it. I dig the idea and I’ve no doubts they’ll raise money in the times of the app stores boom. That’s in case the Appboy folks actually need funding. We certainly wish them all the luck.

A new SMS news alert service has been launched recently. It’s called matchalert and it’s aimed at those dedicated football/soccer fans who want to keep up with their team while on the go.

Although similar services already exist on the market, matchalert says their advantage is in the flexibility and “sophistication of web-based subscription management.” Meaning that users can customise their alerts using the matchalert website, and easily stop the service via the usual “stop” text message.

As I said, it’s customization that’s matchalert’s main strength and in that sense users can:

• receive only the final score, or a single SMS per game;
• subscribe to a whole league – all goals and/or final scores;
• follow a wide range of leagues and teams, including the Barclays Premiership, the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League. Subscription to a particular team means the user receives alerts for that team across all competitions.

Each SMS alert costs 25 pence, plus standard network charges, and users are limited to receiving a maximum of 18 text messages per week…

UK specialist search company Simplexo has launched its mobile offering, enabling anyone working out of the office to securely access corporate documentation and databases via their mobile devices.

Simplexo Mobile is the name of the application/service and it currently works on the iPhone and Windows Mobile devices, with BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) version coming within 30 days. Users can simultaneously search across all enterprise environments including SharePoint, live and archived email, word processing documents, images, spreadsheets, databases, applications such as CRM and SAP, and more. And the results are displayed in a single consolidated list…

Avenir Telecom (a business-to-business telecoms distributor in the UK), has announced a partnership with O2 to provide its new Joined Up communications service to the UK channel.

Avenir is O2’s leading distribution partner, and Joined Up is a fixed line service which will enable businesses to have one single converged solution for their telecoms requirements.

Sorry, not much more info that at the moment (more when it comes) – what you should take away though is that O2 is active in all market segments, including businesses, and they are willing to partner to go after market share. That’s probably why they are leading the pack in the UK at the moment!
