Our illustrious UK author, Ben Robinson, joins us from IntoMobile Towers this episode!
The Signal grows again, now that we’ve got four writers linking up for this week’s episode. This week’s top news is a bit of a mish-mash. The N900 rocks the roost for top story, and Stefan gives us his expert take on Maemo and the new Nokia (NYSE: NOK) handset that straddles MID and smartphone categories nicely. Ben tells us about CoPilot Live, a navigation app for iPhone he’s been trying out, Will gives us the run-down on Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s crowdsourcing for traffic data, and I talk about the huge accessories market and how surprising (or not) the figures are.
As for giveaways, this week we’re tossing out some invisibleSHIELDs for the iPhone 3G or 3GS to our U.S. listeners. These bad boys offer excellent scratch protection for your beloved precious without the added bulk of a full case, and normally retail for $24.95. Drop a comment or tweet using the #intomobile hashtag for your chance to win one of three!
Speaking of tweeting, all four of us go over our current Twitter clients for App of the Week – take a listen after the jump if you’re wondering what to use, or just want to scope out the week’s biggest mobile rumours and releases.

With shots of Maemo coming out, it looks like Symbian has a future after all…

It was tricky talking about Maemo and its appearance on the unreleased N900 without Stefan around this week, but Will and I make do, as well as chat about Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s relationship with carriers, the iPhone’s profitability, and its potential expansion into China.
Our HTC Magic from Vodafone giveaway rolls on for another week for the UK readers, so be sure to enter while you still can. There are four ways to go about it – be sure to do ‘em all to maximize your odds!
- Leave a comment on this podcast post
- Follow @IntoMobile on twitter
- Use the #intomobile tag when tweeting
- Visit the HTC Magic’s page on the Vodafone.uk site and send an e-mail to contest@intomobile.com with the THREE different items located in the “Key Features” section.
Our review goes over the Magic in detail, but the bottom line is that it’s a slick, smooth, functional smartphone that is most definitely worth the trouble of dropping a comment. If you’re looking to enter, be sure to go over the terms and conditions at the end of the post.
If you’re in the market for some games for your phone, Will and I run down a few in our Apps of the Week segment, with download links and the rest of the week’s mobile news available after the jump.

I bet Tamara Hope is making wispy, existential analogies about your GPS position right now…
Will, Stefan and I run down the week’s mobile news, with Palm (NSDQ: PALM)’s policies on location and Pre app tracking taking up a big part of the episode, but we also go over Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s burgeoning love affair and what it means for Windows Mobile (if anything). New information on the upcoming Zer01 service has Will completely reneging his (and many others’) previous enthusiasm for the prospect of unlimited VoIP calls and data for $70/month.
Our giveaway this episode is the biggest yet: an HTC Magic from Vodafone. Yes, that means it’s for our UK readers, and because it’s a doozy, we’ll be running it for two weeks and offering four ways to enter.

If you’re wondering how she runs, be sure to take a look at our review – personally, I was personally very impressed. Be sure to go over the terms and conditions at the end of the post if you’re going to be entering. U.S. readers, we still have an Opera shirt contest to tide y’all over until the next go-around, which will be something equally awesome.
Our Apps of the Week segment centres around food this episode – recipies, restaurants and shopping utilities across a whole bunch of mobile platforms will definitely make your cooking life easier. Hit the jump to see what they are, alongside a heaping mouthful of the week’s biggest mobile news.

Never put it past Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) to piss off the world two weeks in a row.
Between censoring dictionary apps and Eric Schmidt leaving the board of directors, we’ve got plenty more Apple drama this week. Will and I run down the Apple review process, as well as follow up on the Apple/Google (NSDQ: GOOG) relationship talk from last week. Unfortunately Stefan wasn’t around to elaborate on his excellent tirade on the mythical iTablet, but we give our own relatively moderate takes on the situation.
Our giveaway this week is the BlackBerry VM-605 Bluetooth Visor, which normally retails for $84.99, is a fine accessory if your handset doesn’t support FM transmission. By simply pairing up by Bluetooth and setting your car radio tuner, you can shunt your phone calls and music to the stereo system with minimal fuss. A single-button control system lets you pause music and initiate voice-activated dialing without being distracted by what’s on the road. U.S. residents, leave a comment, and you’ve got a chance to win this beaut!
Our App of the Week segment goes over photography options for mobile. Sharing, improving image quality and video streaming are all fair game, and all our apps picks are free! To check them out and lots more of the last week’s mobile news, hit the jump!

C’mon, who really uses Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Voice anyway? Oh. That many, huh?
Man, if Joe Rogan is pissed at Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) about pulling the third-party Google Voice app, you know it’s serious. What, Mike Arrington’s ditching his iPhone over it? Ah, whatever. In addition to the GV debacle, Will, Stefan and I also go through the relationship between Google and Facebook vis-a-vis a potential Android app, as well as what Sprint (NYSE: S)’s acquisition of Virgin Mobile U.S.A means for both companies.
This week we’re giving away a black mophie juice pack air for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The juice pack air a lighter and sleeker version of their beefier, more powerful version, but still offers a significant boost to battery life for those power users out there. U.S. readers, leave a comment in this post for your chance to win!
So long as you’re commenting, check out Stefan’s post asking how much you pay in a month on wireless, and what you get for it. I think we’ll see a lot of interesting international contrasts there, so go ahead and take a look at the comments so far.
We’re also continuing our App of the Week series. This episode we’re looking at travel apps for iPhone, Symbian and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) – hit the jump for download links, and the week’s headlines, rumors and releases!

We’ve got a new Apps of the Week segment! Waddayathink?
Will, Stefan and I are back for this week’s IntoMobile podcast – a lot of dramatic news this week, including suicides, slicing up bankrupt wireless giants, and widespread service outages. We take some time to talk about Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s use of Safari for their iPhone implementation of Latitute and what signal it sends to Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) about web apps.
We’re also introducing a new Apps of the Week segment, where we each tackle an app for a different platform, but all surrounding a common theme. We went with “summer” as a fairly general thing, but are open to suggestions for future episodes.
We’re extending the Joggler giveaway for our UK readers. As ever, you can enter in one of three ways:
- Leave a comment here in the post
- Follow @IntoMobile on Twitter
- Tweet using the #IntoMobile hashtag
In short, the Joggler is a home media and communication hub that retails for £149 Contest terms and conditions at the end of the post. Be sure to check out Ben’s stories on his experience with the device for a full run-down.
The poll this week is regarding AT&T (NYSE: T)’s infamous iPhone visual voicemail outage. Are you still have problems, or has everything been fixed? Leave your vote so everyone can know what’s up!

LG, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Symbian all announce app stores in the same week?

It’s just Stefan and I this episode, as Will is off gallivanting at Mobile Beat 2009, but no worries, it was a pretty slow week news-wise. Although there wasn’t much happening on the device side of things, three announcements for app stores certainly caught our attention. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE)’s second quarter losses also got us talking about how much to blame on the recession. Of course, the bickering between Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and Palm (NSDQ: PALM) continue, and we talk about what the iTunes syncing blockage really means.
This week’s giveaway is for our UK readers – again, from the fine folks at O2. Ben’s been playing around with the Joggler, and now he’s got one to give away! If you haven’t caught his coverage of this device, it’s a pretty cool idea, and focuses as something of a family hub for calendar events (which sends SMS reminders as needed), and even acts as a digital picture frame with 1 GB of on-board memory and streaming from your PC over Wi-Fi. You’ve got three ways to win one of these bad boys.
- Leave a comment here in the post
- Follow @IntoMobile on Twitter
- Tweet using the #IntoMobile hashtag
The Joggler usually goes for £149, so be sure to use all three ways to enter to boost your chances! Be sure to check the Terms and Conditions at the end of the post for the full rules.
Finally, we’ve got a new poll. Will’s been having some issues with random restarts on the Palm Pre apparently due to a loose battery, and was wondering if he was alone. Most people so far aren’t having any issues whatsoever, but if you happen to be one of the unfortunate minority, let us know!

So, who’s holding out for Rachael? What’s a Hero?
This week is dominated by Android news, predominately by our first look at Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE)’s new Xperia model code-named Rachael, as well as smashed rumours regarding Nokia (NYSE: NOK) picking up Android. Will and I close up our discussions regarding the Touch Pro 2 and the N97, and Stefan sums up his talk with the UI tech manager at Symbian (definitely worth a listen, if you didn’t catch it earlier this week).
Participation in the Vuzix iWear giveaway last week was great, but we’ve chosen our winner – Michael Welcher, congratulations! Thanks to everyone for the enthusiasm, and for listening! This week, we’re giving away ar 16 GB microSD card from SanDisk; you know the drill, drop a comment and you’ve got a chance to pick yours up. If that doesn’t quite do it for you, you should check out their 60 Second Mobile Video Contest on YouTube – send them a video clip of your favourite summer places, activities, whatever, and you can win one of 25 weekly prize packs or $1000 prize pack, or even the $5000 grand prize at the end of August. The contest runs until August 10th., so get recording!

Well, well, well. Look who came crawlin’ back.
Well, not really crawling; it’s awesome having Stefan back. This week we’ve managed to wrestle time zone issues down and got the prodigal son, Stefan Constantinescu, to get on the weekly podcast. Considering his time at Nokia (NYSE: NOK), we go over the N97 a fair bit in preparation for our head-to-head review with the Touch Pro 2. The Android-powered Hero gets sufficiently gushed over, as well as the introduction of HTC’s Sense user interface.
We’ve got a fresh giveaway this week – you might have seen Ben writing about Vuzix here, there and everywhere, and now we’ve got a pair to give away! These glasses work with iPhones, computers with S-Video and any mobile phone with video out to provide an immersive multimedia experience. This particular model, the AV310, usually retails for $249.95, so it’s well worth your while to drop a comment for a chance to win ‘em.

It’s funny what people will line up for these days, isn’t it?
So yeah, there was a lot of noise about the iPhone 3G S this week, but all of the other big names were sure to crowd the day with their own launches to shoulder their way into the spotlight. RIM let loose the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) 9630 Tour, Samsung unloaded five handsets in a remarkable display of confusion, and LG also squeezed out an E71ish device this week. Will and I also go over the rash of augmented reality apps that were popping up and the role of magnetic compasses in the proliferation of similar types of apps. You might have heard that we gave away three iPhone 3G Ses (in gift certificate form) to some lucky readers this week – this go-round we’re catching our breath and giving away some IntoMobile t-shirts to three lucky readers. Drop a comment, and you’re in!
Speaking of a new BlackBerry, this week’s poll is fielding your opinions on the upcoming lineup. There’s a lot of new BlackBerrys on the way – which one tickles your thumbs?
