In Podcast, The Signal

intomobile the signal logo The Signal Podcast #26: Pre paring to Launch

So, how long will Pre owners last in the wild before getting mugged?

With shortages like what we’re hearing, not long. Will and I talk up the imminent Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre launch on Sprint (NYSE: S) and how folks shopping at Radio Shack or Best Buy will potentially be out of luck. We can only hope that stock will build up over the following weeks. Rumours of the next-generation iPhone also spark some discussion, and make us wonder about what to expect from Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s WWDC show coming up early next month.

The turnout for last week’s contest was sad, so let’s try it again; leave a comment for your chance to win one of three microSD memory cards from SanDisk. 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB sizes are available, so have drop us a line! So long as you’re after the jump and listening to the podcast, be sure to check out our latest poll regarding Apple’s work-around for multitasking applications. Is it good enough for you?

intomobile the signal logo The Signal Podcast #25: WES Wrap up and microSD GiveawayNo BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Tour at WES makes me a sad panda.

sandisk microsd 16g The Signal Podcast #25: WES Wrap up and microSD GiveawayBut no worries, we saw plenty of it in and other unreleased devices the week following the year’s biggest BlackBerry show. In fact, you can hear my own awe-stricken reaction to the BlackBerry 8520 Gemini on the latest CrackBerry podcast. On The Signal, Will and I run down the main points from WES, the devices that followed, as well as what’s going on with the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre and when we’ll see the dang thing. Big ups to contest winner in the UK who scored himself an XDA-Zest from O2 (NYSE: TEF), but this week we’re bringing it back to the U.S. and giving away three microSD cards to random commenters here in the podcast post – just drop a line with what you thought of this episode of The Signal and you could win a free 4 GB, 8 GB or even 16 GB SanDisk microSD card.  Just remember, you gotta live in the U.S. to be eligible.

intomobile the signal logo The Signal (IntoMobile Podcast: Episode 24) Win a Free Xda Zest from O2!Any UK readers in the house want to win a free Xda Zest from O2 (NYSE: TEF)?

o2 xda zest The Signal (IntoMobile Podcast: Episode 24) Win a Free Xda Zest from O2!Oh, you dirty colonials wish you could get your mitts on this one, dontcha? Instead of sticking to the U.S. as per our last couple of giveaways, this week we’re focusing on U.K. readers interested in getting some sweet Windows Mobile lovin’ from O2. Big ups to our resident UK writer, Ben for working his sly, debonair charm on the O2 PR team. Be sure to check out his posts if you happen to be on that side of the pond. To win, all you have to do is follow @IntoMobile on Twitter and you’re automatically entered! (If you’re already following and you want in, just unfollow and follow again so we get the notification e-mail.)

Free crap aside, we’ve got plenty going on this week, namely by way of younger OSes getting a lot of fresh devices. WebOS saw Eos pop up with a full spec list, Android had three new phones show their faces (two from Motorola (NYSE: MOT), one from Samsung), and lots of rumours about next gen Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) hardware coming to Verizon (NYSE: VZ). We also have our weekly poll after the jump, where we speculate the final fate of Palm (NSDQ: PALM). Will they make to 2010, or are the Eos and Pre not enough to pull Palm out of their rut?

The Signal (IntoMobile Podcast: Episode 23)

By Simon Sage on Sunday, April 19th, 2009 at 1:56 PM PST
In Podcast, The Signal

intomobile the signal logo The Signal (IntoMobile Podcast: Episode 23)Does Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) really have that much of a stranglehold on multitouch?

News might have been a little light this week, but we still manage to bring some good listening this episode, as we have patent attorney Barry Negrin from Pryor Cashman to run us through Apple’s legal situation with multi-touch. Elan had initiated legal action aginst the iPhone manufacturer last week, so we thought it might be worth exploring how the patents affect Apple and other handset manufacturers, like Palm (NSDQ: PALM). There’s plenty of other news, as ever, just hit the jump for your weekly dosage. We’re having another go at giving away our Plantronics bluetooth headset to anyone in the U.S. – just leave a comment and you’ve got a chance to win!

The Signal (Episode 22: CTIA Wireless 2009 Edition)

By Simon Sage on Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 at 2:56 PM PST
In CTIA Wireless 2009 @ Las Vegas, Live Event Coverage, Podcast, The Signal

intomobile the signal logo The Signal (Episode 22: CTIA Wireless 2009 Edition)Well, that was underwhelming.

CTIA Wireless 2009 wasn’t an especially stunning show, but Will and I run down the main device releases from Samsung and HTC, followed by an interview with RIM Manager of Developer Relations Mike Kirkup on their App World launch. I’ve been hearing some anger from abroad about the UK, Canada, and U.S. limitations on the App World, nevermind the 1.0 bumps expected in a product launch. Still, App World is overall a good thing for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM), and we all wait with bated breath to see how it evolves. We’re going to have another go at giving away those Z.buds – just leave a comment and you have a shot! This week’s poll has to do with restriction on Skype for the iPhone imposed by carriers. Are Wi-Fi-only versions of the software fair, or should the carrier protect their role as a service provider rather than just being dumb pipes?

The Signal (IntoMobile Podcast: Episode 21)

In Podcast, The Signal

intomobile the signal logo The Signal (IntoMobile Podcast: Episode 21)Rev your engines, technophiles, CTIA Wireless is next week…

This is the last hoo-rah before CTIA Wireless starting next Wednesday, and there’s plenty of news happening. Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) had a bit of a rough week from all angles – customer, developer and even patent-wise. For this week’s poll, we tap the developer problem on the shoulder: is it cool that Apple keeps its 30% cut and the developers have to cover whole refunds on their own? The majority of votes right now are leaning on the developer’s side, but go ahead and have your say after the jump. The giveaways also continue this week: just drop a comment (maybe even voicing your opinion on this iPhone App Store debacle) and you can win a free pair of Z.Buds from Zagg

Polls, giveaways, and the week’s biggest news after the jump!

The Signal (IntoMobile Podcast: Episode 20)

By Simon Sage on Friday, March 20th, 2009 at 2:25 PM PST
In Podcast, The Signal

intomobile the signal logo The Signal (IntoMobile Podcast: Episode 20)Congratulations on MMS and cut/paste, iPhone. Welcome to five years ago.

Aw, sorry, is that a bit snide? In all honesty, iPhone 3.0 was a pretty big deal and Will and I sum up our impressions in this week’s podcast. There’s a lot going on in the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) world, including the 9630 Niagara, the 8325 Curve and the contentious BlackBerry 9900. We had heard of a Bold with a touchscreen named Magnum, but this is the first we’ve seen of it, however some think it’s just a big hoax, based on spotting the old 8800 microphone. What do you say? Drop a vote in this week’s poll and maybe we can come to some kind of concensus. Our weekly giveaways continue, this time with skins from DecalGirl to five lucky commenters. Stefan will win the Plantronics 925 Discovery Headset from last week, but hey, try your luck again this go-round: just leave a comment and you’re entered.

There’s plenty more news after the jump!

…and if you really wanted to, you could also listen to the podcast. Or, heaven forfend, cut and paste? Make your vote before the Tuesday announcement, and leave a comment with your thoughts on Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s plans for a chance to win a free Bluetooth headset. All that aside, we also chat about the underwhelming Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre webinar, Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s plans for GrandCentral, the new Cydia app for the jailbroken iPhone market, and a new MVNO who thinks it’s got a better chance than Helio.

The Signal (IntoMobile Podcast: Episode 18)

By Simon Sage on Friday, March 6th, 2009 at 4:44 PM PST
In Podcast, The Signal

intomobile the signal logo The Signal (IntoMobile Podcast: Episode 18)Is it just me, or are the a lot of phones catching on fire this week?

Seriously, we’ve got Quickfire taken off shelves, the Bold is warming up, even the iPhone is on fire! Regardless, the biggest thing happening this week is the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) App World, but Will and I do chat about Motorola (NYSE: MOT), and how they’re recession woes versus Nokia (NYSE: NOK). Two new phones, the Versa and 8 GB Renoir caught our eye as well, and generated some good discussion about design versus horsepower. There’s plenty of other news items we didn’t cover, but you can see the full link list after the jump.

The Signal (Episode 17: Mobile World Congress 2009 Edition)

In Live Event Coverage, Mobile World Congress 2009, Podcast, The Signal

The SignalNervous exhaustion, shmervous exhaustion. Here’s the year’s busiest week of mobile news.

Mobile World Congress has come and gone, in case you haven’t noticed our live-from-Barcelona coverage, and it’s time to rein it all in and figure out what actually happened. There’s a ton of new devices that were on display from most major manufacturers (sorry, RIM and Motorola (NYSE: MOT)), and too many solutions providers to keep track of. We have the prolific Dusan Belic joining us this episode, which is a rare treat indeed – before MWC, we’ve never been in the same time zone, let alone room! If you’re wondering where the podcast was last week, I was in New York covering a little RIM to-do, and stuck around for the CrackBerry podcast with RIM VP of Developer Relations, Mike Kirkup – feel free to take a listen if you’re into the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) stuff.

Our Mobile World Congress Edition of The Signal Podcast is behind the jump – check it out!
