The new iPhone 3GS demands a lot of attention, but Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre, anyone?
Of course the hype of WWDC wasn’t exactly justified with the iPhone 3GS’ modest, incremental upgrades, but who’ll complain about a new iPhone, especially with the price cuts to the original iPhone? Will and I also run down what’s happening with Verizon and their supposed claim to the Palm Pre in 2010, as well as how the Eos’ future depends on its performance. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) gets some time in the limelight, as we patiently await the N97 in the mail and jealously glance at other reviews floating around.

Magic is in the air up north, and so is swine flu.
Simon’s back after a nasty run-in with a non-pork-related flu, and managed to rally in time to go to the Rogers (NYSE: RCI)’ HTC Magic and Dream launch event in Toronto. Android sure took its sweet time coming to Canada, so Will and I speculate a bit on the timing and iPhone considerations, but lots of other news went down over the last two weeks. AT&T (NYSE: T)’s ‘09 lineup got completely spilled, and we run down some of the new handsets, like the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Magnum and some frumpy-looking Nokias. Of course, the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre launches tomorrow on Sprint (NYSE: S), and we take one last stab at how the stock situation will affect the launch, as well as consider some of the early reviews.

So, how long will Pre owners last in the wild before getting mugged?
With shortages like what we’re hearing, not long.Will and I talk up the imminent Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre launch on Sprint (NYSE: S) and how folks shopping at Radio Shack or Best Buy will potentially be out of luck. We can only hope that stock will build up over the following weeks. Rumours of the next-generation iPhone also spark some discussion, and make us wonder about what to expect from Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s WWDC show coming up early next month.

No BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Tour at WES makes me a sad panda.
But no worries, we saw plenty of it in and other unreleased devices the week following the year’s biggest BlackBerry show. In fact, you can hear my own awe-stricken reaction to the BlackBerry 8520 Gemini on the latest CrackBerry podcast. On The Signal, Will and I run down the main points from WES, the devices that followed, as well as what’s going on with the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre and when we’ll see the dang thing. Does Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) really have that much of a stranglehold on multitouch?
News might have been a little light this week, but we still manage to bring some good listening this episode, as we have patent attorney Barry Negrin from Pryor Cashman to run us through Apple’s legal situation with multi-touch. Elan had initiated legal action aginst the iPhone manufacturer last week, so we thought it might be worth exploring how the patents affect Apple and other handset manufacturers, like Palm (NSDQ: PALM). There’s plenty of other news, as ever, just hit the jump for your weekly dosage. In CTIA Wireless 2009 @ Las Vegas, Live Event Coverage, Podcast, The Signal
Well, that was underwhelming.
CTIA Wireless 2009 wasn’t an especially stunning show, but Will and I run down the main device releases from Samsung and HTC, followed by an interview with RIM Manager of Developer Relations Mike Kirkup on their App World launch. I’ve been hearing some anger from abroad about the UK, Canada, and U.S. limitations on the App World, nevermind the 1.0 bumps expected in a product launch. Still, App World is overall a good thing for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM), and we all wait with bated breath to see how it evolves. We’re going to have another go at giving away those Z.buds – just leave a comment and you have a shot! This week’s poll has to do with restriction on Skype for the iPhone imposed by carriers. Are Wi-Fi-only versions of the software fair, or should the carrier protect their role as a service provider rather than just being dumb pipes?

This is the last hoo-rah before CTIA Wireless starting next Wednesday, and there’s plenty of news happening. Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) had a bit of a rough week from all angles – customer, developer and even patent-wise. For this week’s poll, we tap the developer problem on the shoulder: is it cool that Apple keeps its 30% cut and the developers have to cover whole refunds on their own? Congratulations on MMS and cut/paste, iPhone. Welcome to five years ago.
Aw, sorry, is that a bit snide? In all honesty, iPhone 3.0 was a pretty big deal and Will and I sum up our impressions in this week’s podcast. There’s a lot going on in the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) world, including the 9630 Niagara, the 8325 Curve and the contentious BlackBerry 9900. We had heard of a Bold with a touchscreen named Magnum, but this is the first we’ve seen of it, however some think it’s just a big hoax, based on spotting the old 8800 microphone. What do you say?
