Unlock your factory fresh iPhone 3GS with ‘blacksn0w’ (OS 3.1.2 and baseband 05.11 friendly)!

If you accidentally updated your iPhone 3G/3GS to the latest iPhone OS 3.1/3.1.2, then you’re also stuck with baseband version 05.11. If you recently bought a factory fresh iPhone 3GS with OS 3.1 or 3.1.2 already loaded, then you’re in the same boat. That used to be a bad thing, because baseband 05.11 couldn’t be unlocked to work with unofficial SIM cards. Today’s release of “blacksn0w” changes all that. The blacksn0w software unlock utility is now available to unlock any iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS running the latest iPhone OS 3.1.2 and baseband 05.11!

Yes, that includes brand new, out-of-the-box, iPhone 3GS’s.

If you’re running an older version of the baseband (04.26), simply jailbreak your iPhone and run Ultrasn0w. You can find your baseband firmware version by navigating to Settings>General>About>Modem Version on your iPhone. We have jailbreak (PwnageTool) directions here and unlock (ultrasn0w) directions here.

For the rest of you in the “baseband 05.11″ boat, keep reading for a step-by-step tutorial to unlock your iPhone…

First, you’ll need to jailbreak your iPhone. We’re going to use the blackra1n jailbreak utility for this guide. You can use PwnageTool, but it will require you download blacksn0w separately. Just follow this guide and you’ll be fine. (if you’re already jailbroken, skip to the unlock section)

Download blackra1n from blackra1n.com (choose Mac or PC version)
Extract blackra1n to your desktop
Execute blackra1n with a double-click
Connect your iPhone 3G/3GS to your computer
Click “make it ra1n”
- Your iPhone will reboot
You’ll see geohot’s picture upon reboot
Let blackra1n do it’s thing and wait for reboot
Once rebooted, you’ll be told your iPhone is now jailbroken

Now you’ll unlock your iPhone 3G/3GS’s baseband (version 05.11 only) – check your baseband version by navigating to Settings>General>About>Modem Version on your iPhone.

Find the “ra1n” app on your homescreen and run it
Hit the “sn0w” button
Let the app work its magic, it’s unlocking your baseband
Once your iPhone 3G/3GS is unlocked, you’ll be prompted to close the app
Enjoy your unlocked iPhone! (remember to disable “3G Data” if you’re on T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) USA)
- You’ll notice that “Cydia” is now installed on your homescreen. This is your jailbreak appstore, it’s your new best friend.

Note: If you want to remove the “ra1n” app, simply fire up the app again and select the “Uninstall blackra1n” option

Banish unwanted iPhone photo rotation with a little tap-and-hold

The iPhone’s big 3.5-inch display is great for watching videos and viewing photos. It’s also great for boring your friends with photos from your Napa Valley vacation (trust us, that vineyard was way more impressive in person). Here’s a quick tip to keep your photos locked in a particular orientation:

Simply rotate your iPhone into the orientation you’d like, then tap-and-hold on the photo. A little “Copy” bubble will appear, effectively locking the photo in place.

The tap-and-hold method isn’t elegant or optimal, but it sure is convenient. Give it a try next time you’re sharing photos with friends!

How-to: Bring auto-complete back to your HTC Touch Pro2

In-line auto-completion can be a godsend when you’re tapping out a long-winded email. Unfortunately for all you HTC Touch Pro2 owners, HTC decided to disable the feature in favor of you using the trick slide-and-tilt QWERTY keyboard. Auto-completion is still available through the Touch Pro2’s Windows Mobile Professional OS, but it takes a little fiddling to get it back up and running. According to XDA user k99w, all it takes is a couple registry changes to re-enable auto-completion.

First off, be aware that editing your Windows Mobile registry can potentially leave you with an expensive paperweight. That’s the worst-case scenario. Second, always make sure to backup your data – you never know what could happen. Third, you do this at your own risk.

Here’s how:

You’ll need a Windows Mobile registry editor. PHM Registry Editor is a good editor – especially since it’s free.
Search your registry for “HKLM\Software\Tegic\eT9\XT9SupportMSSi” and make sure it has a value of 0
Search for “HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\control\layouts\e0010409″ and change:

Ime File: \windows\et9ime.dll to Ime File: \windows\compime.dll

Layout Text : ET9 IME to Layout Text : COMP IME

Reboot your phone.
Enjoy auto-completion!

iPhone hardware call recorder puts function over form

There are iPhone apps that allow you to record phone conversations for blackmail your personal records (SpoofApp and Recorder 10 are good examples), but they apparently weren’t up to snuff for DIY gadget hacker Adam Byers. The currently available iPhone apps require that you jailbreak your iPhone, pay by the minute for call recordings and can only record calls originating from the iPhone [credit to Adam for the clarification]. That just wasn’t going to cut it. Instead, Byers took it upon himself to craft his own hardware solution to the iPhone call recording problem. The end result is a big black box that obviously puts function over form, but allows you to record both sides of an iPhone conversation relatively easily.

The only catch here is that you have to make your own iPhone call recording “Black Box” yourself. If you don’t know your way around a wiring diagram and a soldering iron, we’d suggest you stay away from this mod. Those of you with some electrical engineering experience will probably still find this mod to be too much of a hassle (jailbreaking your iPhone is soo much easier). The five remaining DIY hackers out there can find instructions for making an iPhone hardware call recorder here.

Just remember, recording phone conversations isn’t exactly 100% legal everywhere. Make sure you keep that in mind before recording a phone conversation.

iPhone meets HTC Sense UI

Fancy yourself playing with the HTC Sense UI, but can’t bear to part with your iPhone? Well, you’re in luck. The Sense UI is now available on the iPhone as a custom-made theme!

While the likes of T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) myTouch 3G users will probably never get to use the widget-friendly Sense UI (licensing restrictions being what they are), the unlikeliest of smartphones has been blessed with this year’s most intriguing UI. To be fair, though, the Sense UI hasn’t been ported to the iPhone per se. Instead, the iPhone OS homescreen can be modified to look and work just like HTC’s own Android interface.

In order to get the Sense-like theme onto your iPhone, you’ll have to jailbreak the handset and install a few apps through Cydia. Redmond Pie’s tutorial will guide you through a step-by-step process for getting the Androidy Sense UI onto your iPhone.

DIY: Anti-static bag helps reduce cellphone speaker buzz

Unless you’re the type that won’t settle for anything less than a high-end magnetically-shielded speaker, you’re probably familiar with the dreaded cellphone speaker “buzz.” All those electromagnetic radio waves streaming to and from your mobile phone can sometimes cause interference with unshielded speakers – the result is an annoying buzzing through your speakers. One DIY (Do-It-Yourself) solution is to extract a magnetic bead from a USB cable and jury-rig it onto your speaker cables. But, that method requires some cutting and a bit of elbow grease. Why not just use an everyday anti-static bag?

Also known as electrostatic bags, anti-static bags are those shiny metallic-coated bags that your graphics cards, RAM sticks and hard drives come packaged in. You’ve probably thrown away more of these electrostatic bags than you know. But, you probably didn’t know that anti-static bag could finally eliminate that speaker buzz!

Simply sitting your mobile phone in top of an anti-static bag will squash all magnetic interference. The next time your speakers start buzzing because your homies are blowin’ up the cellie, just find that shiny silver bag and place it over the cellphone.

The Verizon Wireless Palm Pre… kinda, sorta

The Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre’s success is only being held back by Sprint (NYSE: S)’s exclusivity deal on the WebOS-powered smartphone. Both Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless and AT&T (NYSE: T) have made it known that the Palm Pre is most certainly on their radar (although, Sprint isn’t shy about reaffirming their own exclusivity deal), but we’ve yet to even see either carrier officially embracing the smartphone. Thankfully, no lack of carrier support could stop Pre-hacker Cleanser from porting his once Sprint-locked Palm Pre to the Verizon Wireless network. With a little ingenuity and some elbow-grease, Cleanser has managed to create a Verizon Wireless Palm Pre of sorts.

The Pre’s CDMA radio hardware is already compatible with Verizon’s CDMA network, so it makes sense that someone could get the Pre roaming Big Red’s US network. But, it’s most definitely a hack and isn’t going to be a viable option for the average Palm Pre customer.

Voice calls and SMS text messages are a go, but wireless data is still in in the works. With a little luck, Cleanser will have the Palm Pre fully functional on Verizon Wireless in due time.

Jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 3GS with purplera1n and ultrasn0w!

The original iPhone hacker has returned to work his magic on the iPhone 3GS and its iPhone 3.0 OS. Thanks to George Hotz, the iPhone 3GS is now officially jailbroken and ready to take full advantage of its faster processor and boosted RAM stores! That also means the iPhone 3GS can now be unlocked to work with any GSM network in the world (more on that below).

While the iPhone Dev Team has elected to withhold the iPhone 3GS jailbreak until Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) releases the impending iPhone 3.1 OS update, iPhone hacker George “Geohot” Hotz has just released his own iPhone 3GS jailbreak solution, dubbed “purplera1n.”

Continuing the tradition of oddly-named iPhone hacking utilities, purplera1n can successfully jailbreak any and all iPhone 3GS’s running the latest iPhone 3.0 OS (which comes pre-installed from the factory). The iPhone 3.0 OS has been jailbroken for some time, but only for iPhone or iPhone 3G hardware. With Geohot’s purplera1n utility, iPhone 3GS owners can now install unofficial third-party iPhone apps like “backgrounder” (allows you to multi-task your iPhone apps). Once jailbroken, any iPhone 3GS can be software unlocked using ultrasn0w.

The purplera1n jailbreak is still very much in beta, so use it at your own risk. The jailbreak works fine, but you might have to repeat the process more than once to get it to take. If you’re more comfortable with the iPhone Dev Team’s official jailbreak releases, you can just wait for them to release their PwnageTool update (it shouldn’t be too much of a wait). You can download the iPhone Dev Team’s redsn0w jailbreak utility for all iPhone hardware running iPhone 3.0 OS. Ultrasn0w can still be used to unlock your iPhone 3GS after jailbreaking with redsn0w. Here’s what you need to do to get your iPhone 3GS jailbroken (this guide is done on Mac, but all screenshots have analogs in Windows):

Download “purplera1n” (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X) here
Make sure you have iTunes 8.2.0.23 (upgrade if necessary)
Unzip the purplera1n .zip file
Double-click on the “purplera1n” icon
Click “make it ra1n”
You should see “waiting to reboot” – your iPhone 3GS will eventually go into Recovery Mode and splash this screen:
- If iTunes intializes and complains of your iPhone being in recovery mode, just close iTunes.
- If you get stuck at the Recovery Mode screen, give it a minute or two. If you are still stuck after a bit of waiting, try clicking on “make it ra1n” again.
- If all else fails, restart the process from the beginning.
Your iPhone 3GS will reboot. Find the newly installed “Freeze” application on your homescreen and fire it up
Freeze only has one button/purpose – to install the Cydia jailbreak applications store. Click “Install Cydia”
Once Cydia is installed, reboot the iPhone 3GS
Fire up Cydia and perform a “Complete Update” (you can get away with “Essential Update” but you might as well just perform a full update)The below steps are optional. iPhone unlock directions below. Continue if you want to remove the now useless Freeze app and/or perform a software unlock on your iPhone 3GS using ultrasn0w
In Cydia, search for “CyDelete”
Install “CyDelete”
- This will also install Mobile Substrate, and could cause iPhone 3.0 OS to freeze. If that happens, just hold the power button down until your iPhone 3GS turns off. Then just reboot and continue with this tutorial
Configure CyDelete to delete the “Freeze” application by navigating to Settings>CyDelete and enabling “Non-Cydia Deletion”
Return to the homescreen and hold down on any app icon to enable app-delete mode (icons will jiggle)
Go ahead and delete “Freeze”

The below steps will help you perform a software unlock of your iPhone 3GS, allowing it to work on any GSM network in the world.
Download the iPhone Dev Team’s “ultrasn0w” software unlock utility through Cydia
- You’ll need to add this repo to your Cydia “Sources” list:
  repo666.ultrasn0w.com
Install the “ultrasn0w” utility
Reboot your iPhone 3GS with whatever SIM card you choose
NOTE: T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) USA users need to first disable “3G

The rest of us haven’t even considered making a DIY iPhone tripod. For those of you in that second category, iPhone-modder Scott Patrick has posted a DIY video that explains how to make an iPhone tripod using a Contour Case and a few hardware knick-knacks.

iPhone (2G) gets MMS, courtesy of a hacked iPhone OS 3.0

One of iPhone OS 3.0s most anticipated features is its support for MMS, sometimes called pictures messages. Unfortunately, the original iPhone crowd was left out of the party. Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) only enabled MMS support for iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 3GSs running the latest iPhone 3.0 OS. Today, a new jailbreak application has been released, allowing the original iPhone (2G) to rock the default MMS service!

The newly released ActivateMMS2G has been published on the Cydia jailbreak applications store. To enable native support for MMS on your iPhone 2G, simply jailbreak and install the ActivateMMS2G app. You need to add “http://cydia.alpden.com/” to your Cydia Sources.

iPhone OS 3.0 video walk-through

Can’t get enough iPhone news? Still? Cool. Here’s a little video walk-through of what to expect with the new iPhone OS 3.0 firmware. There are a lot of features not shown in the video because some are tied to the iPhone 3G S’s new hardware and so I didn’t have to post a 30 minute video.

First off, keep in mind that some of these “new” features in iPhone OS 3.0 have been available to entry-level handsets for a while. The iPhone 3.0 OS’s new-found support for MMS (which isn’t yet enabled by AT&T (NYSE: T)) has been a long time coming. The iPhone community has been asking for more extensive landscape-view support since iPhone OS 1.0. Copy/Paste! But, then again, every other smartphone I’ve owned for the past decade (well, almost) has been able to copy and paste text with no problem.

On a more positive note, email search is finally a reality – and you can even search archived emails on your email server. Spotlight search is fast and intuitive enough to preempt any actual thinking on your brain’s behalf. Find My iPhone will require a MobileMe subscription, but it works surprisingly well – especially for the absent-minded out there. Parental Controls are a nice touch, like icing on the cake.

iPhone OS 3.0 is what iPhone OS 2.2.1 2.0 1.0 should have been.

Tether your iPhone 3G now!

“But,” you say, “AT&T (NYSE: T) has yet to officially support data tethering on the iPhone OS 3.0.”

That may be true, but that hasn’t stopped the fearless iPhone community from tethering their iPhone 3G’s to AT&T’s data network for free! Thanks to the widely available iPhone 3.0 OS GM (gold master) firmware bearing the “7a341″ designation, iPhone users can get their “tether on” without AT&T’s official blessing. We can’t tell you how or where to get your hands on the iPhone OS 3.0 GM, but a certain search engine (no, not Bing!) will probably do you right. Now that the iPhone OS 3.0 is officially official, tethering your iPhone 3G to your laptop/computer is even easier – as long as you have iPhone OS 3.0 installed on your iPhone 3G.

Here is an even easier, web-based method to enable Internet Tethering on your iPhone 3G (running iPhone OS 3.0). It’s the “ridiculously easy way to enable” iPhone tethering! Of course, the below method is quite simple and works as well.

Five steps to iPhone tethering goodness (make sure you’re upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0!):

Download this carrier settings file
Fire up Terminal on your Mac and type:
defaults write com.apple (NSDQ: AAPL).iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
Connect your iPhone to your Mac and fire up iTunes
- Option-Click the “Restore” button and select the .ipcc file within the .dmg (disk image) file
Once the carrier file is installed, restart your iPhone for good measure
Enjoy the new tethering option under “Settings”

With the iPhone OS 3.0 installed on your legit (using an offical iPhone carrier’s network) iPhone 3G, all it takes is a few button clicks and you’re off surfing AT&T (or your local carrier’s) data network through your iPhone 3G tether. We can confirm that the hack works on the iPhone 3G. Let’s hope it works just as well on the iPhone 3G S!

Enable advanced features on your HTC Touch Pro2

The kinds of customers that are apt to buy high-end smartphones like the HTC Touch Pro2 are probably going to want to squeeze every last bit of functionality out of their new handset. For all you HTC Touch Pro2 power-users, TracyandMatt has released their Advanced HTC Touch Pro2 tweaking guide to help guide you through all the steps required to enable your smartphone’s more advanced features.

HTC did a bang up job on the HTC Touch Pro2. HTC doesn’t technically have any flagship smartphones, but the HTC Touch Pro2 qualifies as the Windows Mobile flagship in our eyes. Skype for iPhone works well over AT&T 3G

A buddy recently let me in on a little secret. You can use the Skype iPhone application over a 3G connection – and it works damn well! No wonder AT&T (NYSE: T) banned Skype from making calls using its 3G data network.

The release of the Skype iPhone application caused quite a stir as carriers around the world moved to block the application accessing its data networks. AT&T restricted Skype for iPhone to its WiFi HotSpots in the US, as did O2 (NYSE: TEF) in the UK. Meanwhile, T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) Germany reportedly blocked Skype from its network entirely – no Skype for iPhone for Germany.

But, it doesn’t have to be like that.

A jailbreak application, called VoIPOver3G, allows jailbroken iPhones to use VoIP applications over 3G wireless networks. You can find it in Cydia, and the install takes all of one minute. VoIPOver3G installs invisibly, much like the yellowsn0w jailbreak utility – once installed, all iPhone VoIP clients simply work over 3G. VoIPOver3G tricks your iPhone into thinking it’s on a WiFi network, allowing VoIP apps like Skype to work on AT&T’s 3G network.

And the kicker – you can use any VoIP application over 3G, not just Skype for iPhone!

Here’s how:

Jailbreak your iPhone or iPhone 3G (don’t know how? click!)
Fire up Cydia
Search for “voipover3g”
Install VoIPOver3G
Enjoy 3G VoIP!

Keep in mind, your VoIP over 3G experience is going to depend on a lot of factors – stuff that goes well over my head. Under good conditions, however, you should find 3G VoIP quality to be decent, sometimes great!

Inject some Diamond2 goodness into your HTC Touch Diamond!

You’re going to have to shell out some cold, hard cash to get HTC’s upcoming HTC Touch Diamond2 smartphone in your pocket, but you can get some of the Diamond2’s software goodies without spending a single dime. The updated Diamond-successor sports nothing less than a 5-megapixel camera (with autofocus), GPS, WiFi, and 3G data connectivity. And then there’s the gorgeously high-res 3.2-inch WVGA resistive touchscreen and touch-sensitive zoom bar. For some, the cost to upgrade to a Diamond2 is worth the upgraded feature-set. For others, a nice little software upgrade should suffice.

The HTC Touch Diamond2’s updated TouchFLO 3D UI includes a lot of new applications and a few tweaks that promise to deliver an even better user experience than did the original Diamond. Thankfully, the apps have been ported to the Diamond via a bunch of ripped .cab files.

Diamond owners need simply download and install a few CAB files to inject some of the Diamond2’s TouchFLO-essence into the already-aging Touch Diamond (the mobile world moves fast, don’t it?). The following apps have been ported from the Diamond2 to the Diamond:

Joe Everypimp’s Guide to BlackBerry Customization

Awhile back, my buddy Al did a roundup of some of the most extreme pimping of BlackBerrys you can find – diamonds, gold, leather you name it. A cool novelty, no doubt, but what about Joe Everymanpimp? Is there not something for the common BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Mack Daddy in a cubic zirconia, pleather, or metallic finish? Why yes, there certainly is, and it won’t cost you hundreds of bucks to ship out your gear to get ‘er done – one needs only the sheer testicular fortitude to disassemble your device and replace the housing. (For the less adventurous, there are skins and swanky battery door replacements.) You might have caught those coloured trackballs last week, but lately it seems original equipment manufacturer outlets are featuring a tonne of other slick parts to swap out.

So gather ye all around, my little pimplings – each page will show disassembly and reassembly videos for each major BlackBerry device, as well as a wealth of bling for your consideration. Of course, there are always themes, cases, and other accessories but let’s stick to the body itself for now, then you can add on the other parts. iPhone Dev Team cracks iPhone 2.2.1 OS – PwnageTool 2.2.5 jailbreaks iPhone and iPhone 3G!

Well, there you have it, folks. It took the iPhone Dev Team no more than a few days to crack the new iPhone 2.2.1 OS. Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) went official with their new iPhone 2.2.1 OS firmware update for iPhone and iPhone 3G users just a few days ago, and The Team has already managed to jailbreak the new iPhone 2.2.1 OS!

The iPhone Dev Team has released an updated version of their iPhone jailbreak application, dubbed Pwnage Tool. With PwnageTool 2.2.5, just about any tech-savvy (and even not-so tech-savvy) iPhone owner can break their precious handset out of file-system “jail.” Quick recap for those of you still wondering what the “jailbreak” does – (1) it is NOT an unlock solution, a jailbroken iPhone cannot be used on foreign GSM networks by virtue of the jailbreak alone, (2) it IS a way for you to interact with your iPhone’s filesystem, which allows you to install unofficial software such as the iPhone unlock software called “yellowsn0w.” (more on that here)

iPhone 3G owners looking forward to one day unlocking the handset for use with foreign GSM carriers should take note – the new iPhone 2.2.1 OS bundles with it a new baseband firmware (modem firmware). The new v.02.30.03 baseband firmware is wholly incompatible with the “yellowsn0w” unlock utility that was recently released by the iPhone Dev Team. Updating your iPhone 3G to a non-jailbroken iPhone 2.2.1 OS will flash your iPhone 3G’s baseband with the new firmware, essentially killing any hope of unlocking the GSM radio for use elsewhere.

If you could care less about unlocking your iPhone 3G, you’re more than welcome to update to iPhone 2.2.1 OS anyway you see fit (iTunes, QuickPWN, PwnageTool). But, if you have even the slightest urge to free (unlock) your iPhone 3G’s GSM radio to surf any GSM network in the world, you’ll want to heed the iPhone Dev Team’s warning and update to iPhone 2.2.1 OS using ONLY Pwnage Tool 2.2.5. — (PwnageTool creates a custom iPhone 2.2.1 OS restore file (the .ipsw file) by opening up the firmware package and replacing the newer 02.30.03 baseband code with the older 02.28.00 baseband code that works with the “yellowsn0w” unlock utility)

Web browsing on the iPhone 3G can be an enjoyable experience. That is, unless you’re running late and need to hit up the web for some mission-critical information. It can be frustrating wasting precious seconds for your web pages to load all those images – 3G can bog down, on EDGE it’s not even funny. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could disable images in your iPhone’s Safari browser?

ImaSafari is a new preference-pane tweak for jailbroken iPhone and iPhone 3G’s that allows you to disable image-loading in Mobile Safari. ImaSafari installs itself as a new toggle switch under Settings>Safari for quick and easy access.

Boot-up your computer from your T-Mobile G1!

Sure, you could just use your T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) G1 as an Android smartphone and call it a fulfilling day. But then you’d be missing out on the geekery that is booting your PC from your T-Mobile G1! The fine folks over at Logical Tech have figured out a way to use the T-Mobile G1 as a bootable USB drive, and they’ve posted a nice little guide on how to do it for yourself.

You see, the T-Mobile G1 sports a microSDHC card slot, allowing you to expand the G1’s storage up to 16GB of space. And, with the T-Mobile G1’s mass storage mode allowing you to use that microSD card like a USB flash drive, the next logical step was to use the T-Mobile G1 as a bootable drive.

Specifically, the Ultimate Boot CD utility that allows you to view and interact with the contents of any hard drive has made the jump from USB drive-based booting to G1-based booting. With a couple patches, you too can use your T-Mobile G1 to boot your PC using the Ultimate Boot CD.

Getting your T-Mobile G1 to act as a bootable drive for your PC is a simple matter of:

Inserting microSD card into G1
Connecting G1 to computer
Mounting the G1 as a USB device
Installing UBCDfix2.exe (extract to folder “UBCD” on your desktop)
Downloading the Ultimate Boot CD to the UBCD folder on your desktop.
Running the fixubcd2.bat file within the UBCD folder

It really is that simple. A few simple steps and a couple downloads is all it takes to turn your G1 into a bootable flash drive running UBCD. Head on over to Logical Tech for the complete tutorial!
