Hands-on with the BlackBerry 8900

Posted by Simon on Friday, October 10th, 2008 at 6:02 am under BlackBerry, Video

Yesterday T-Mobile Germany gave us a glimpse of the BlackBerry 8900, successor to the Curve line, and now it’s time for a closer look. There’s not much new here, but it does give a good idea of the BlackBerry 8900’s layout, including the considerably busier right side and switch to microUSB format. You can also see the Javelin’s heritage between both the BlackBerry Curve and the BlackBerry Bold - slim form and a well-spaced keypad, but nice big screen and the latest OS. The 8900 also reaches into the past to get some keyboard hints from the 8700, but also hints towards the future with a newly redesigned top section and lock key. Overall, the 8900 promises to be a nice iteration to the BlackBerry Curve while offering up a few new twists.

BlackBerry Storm ads emerge (video)

Posted by Simon on Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 at 7:10 am under Advertising, BlackBerry, Verizon, Video, Vodafone

You might remember that video from the Vodafone BlackBerry Storm launch party (before it got taken down) - well, here’s the original presentation, which doesn’t do much outside of getting folks hyped up for RIM’s first touchscreen device. While that might not be entirely for the public eye, Verizon has kicked off their public teaser campaign for the BlackBerry Storm, with an ad during CBS sitcoms the other night. Apparently there are some viral videos in the works showing peoples’ first impressions of the BlackBerry Storm from Verizon, too. Both Verizon and Vodafone both have notification pages set up, so they’ve at least given the BlackBerry 9500 and 9530 a nod, but proper videos just go to show that the Storm is ready to roll. Keep an eye out for this one in early November.

Motorola Q11 caught on video!

Motorola Q11 - notice the indicator lights along the left-side of the display

While we’re not sure if the Motorola Q11 will help Motorola drag itself out of the hole that it’s dug for itself over the past couple years, the evolutionary successor to the Motorola Q9 is definitely worth a mention. The Motorola Q11 has been popping up here and there lately, and it’s finally been caught on video by our friends at Zumo!

With a 3 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, and quad-band GSM/EDGE radio, the Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard-powered Motorola Q11 is apparently being aimed at the younger demographic. We have confirmation that the Motorola Q11 rocks a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, making it that much easier to listen to your favorite tunes on-the-go. There’s also a microSDHC card slot that comes stuffed with a 1GB microSD card, courtesy Microsoft - the microSD card slot can support up to 32GB microSDHC cards for uber storage expandability. And, with an MSN Messenger client integrated into the Motorola Q11, we can definitely see the Motorola Q11 capturing a substantial market-base among its Q-loving constituents.

Notice that the Motorola Q11’s display is slightly offset from center. Aside from looking a bit awkward, the display’s rightward-bias makes room for some indicator lights adorning the left-most edge of the display bezel. If you look closely, you might be able to make out the GPS-lock and (presumably) the Bluetooth icon that seem to light up from beneath the display bezel.

The Motorola Q11 isn’t exactly the innovative leap forward that Motorola needed to bring to the table to save their struggling handset business. But, with a decent feature-set and a muted, yet attractive, design refresh, the Motorola Q11 will likely win over the hearts and minds of at least some customers when it launches sometime before the end of 2008.

Video microblogging from your mobile

Posted by Simon on Monday, October 6th, 2008 at 11:06 am under Social Networking, Video

I just got wind of 12seconds.tv after hearing that they had recently launched their mobile site. This cute little site lets folks post 12 second videos not only from webcams on their computers, but e-mailed from your mobile phone as well. The setup has a distinctly Twitter-esque vibe to it, and in fact allows for automated video posting to existing Twitter accounts. I’d like to see some geotagging functionality to work with integrated GPS units to make it a little more like Spotjots, but that may entail some tailored applications on a per-handset basis - still, it’s something to look forward to. It’s is also incredibly tricky to know when your 12 seconds is up if you have the phone pointed at yourself.

12seconds is still in early testing phases, but definitely worth your while if you’re looking for something a little beefier than Twitpic to spruce up your feed. If you sign up, be sure to add me! If you’re looking for something more in a live streaming service, Qik is a fine mobile-centric alternative.

Qik available on Nokia Tube

Posted by Simon on Friday, October 3rd, 2008 at 6:19 am under Applications, Nokia, Video

Qik was quick to hope on the XpressMusic 5800 bandwagon by offering support for their video sharing service just in time for the device launch. With a native app ready to go already, users will be able to record and stream video from their device to the web. I’m a bit stingier about my bandwidth usage, so something like 12 Seconds is more up my alley, but Qik has been steadily growing in popularity and targeting mobile very specifically. It’ll be interesting to see what other third parties become enamored with the Nokia Tube and decide it’s worth their time to support the new S60 Touch OS.

Video: Tennis player Caroline Wozniacki promotes Sony Ericsson W760

This isn’t the first time we’re seeing the teenaged Danish tennis player promoting a mobile phone for Sony Ericsson. Last time we saw Caroline Wozniacki playing against a transformer robot which was actually the W580 model. Now, the Swedish-Japanese handset maker has invited Caroline to make a video for their W760 Walkman phone, which is arguably one of the best feature phones on the market today.

Although, the commercial is in Danish, you’ll catch the point. The W760 has everything a modern young female needs — a GPS, music player, camera and more. Enjoy the clip!

Sony Ericsson demos Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 and Panel UI

Posted by Will on Monday, September 15th, 2008 at 7:48 pm under Devices, Sony Ericsson, Video, Windows Mobile

HTC isn’t the only game in town when it comes to making Windows Mobile-based smartphones with amazingly high-resolution WVGA touchscreen displays. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 (ironically, made by HTC), has been at the top of our short-list of gotta-have smartphones sporting WVGA touchscreens. But, what good is that widescreen pixel-count if you can’t actually put eyes on the darn thing?

Well, Sony Ericsson sat down with inxperia.com to demonstrate the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 on video to show just how great the WVGA display really is. The demonstration video also walks us through the new Sony Ericsson Panel UI that lies atop the Window Mobile 6.1 Professional platform. In case you missed our coverage of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1’s Panel UI from CTIA SF 2008, Sony Ericsson envisions a future filled with Windows Mobile phones bearing instantly reconfigurable homescreens.

You see, the Panel UI, that has apparenty been the bane of Sony Ericsson’s development process with the XPERIA X1, boasts multiple tiles, or “Panels,” each with its own set of applications and instantly accessible web- and local-data. The idea is that power users will have different needs at different times of the day or year, and each “Panel” represents a different homescreen configuration from which to choose. At home, one vacation, in the office, on the road - you’ll likely demand different functions from your smartphone depending on what it is you’re currently doing. The Panel UI essentially allows the user to quickly switch between homescreen configurations by selecting the appropriate tile, or “Panel.” Web-data is pushed to the handset, allowing for instant-on access to the information that matters to you the most. What’s more, the Sony Ericsson Panel UI SDK allows Windows Mobile developers to custom-design their own Panel for users to download.

Enjoy the video as we wait for Sony Ericsson to make the XPERIA X1 available later this month.

TiVo and BlackBerry… Together at Last!

Posted by James on Thursday, September 11th, 2008 at 8:28 am under BlackBerry, Coming Soon, RIM, Video

TiVo and BlackBerry… Together at Last!TiVo announced today that it has agreed to provide ’some aspects’ of its services for DVR’s to BlackBerry users No financial or other details of the deal between TiVo and RIM were announced, but this is certainly an interesting development, wouldn’t you say?

The initial phase of this deal is expected to be put into action later this year.

I would expect TiVo subscribers that have a BlackBerry on hand to call up TV programming schedules, and set their DVR’s to record shows remotely, from wherever they are at. Cool!

Texting while riding your motorcycle can be fun, dangerous

Posted by Will on Thursday, August 28th, 2008 at 1:52 pm under Video

We obviously don’t condone any activity that would put yours or the lives of your fellow commuters in danger. That being said, this footage of some idiot nonchalantly lounging on his bike while using his mobile phone (presumably to send out an SMS text message) really drives home the need for laws prohibiting the use of mobile phones on the road.

Like most laws, prohibitions on cellphone use while behind the wheel (or handle-bars, as in this particular case) of a motor vehicle have been crafted to protect us from the lowest common denominator. Sure, most of us can safely use our mobiles while driving, but the small percentage of you out there that can’t do it safely (you know who you are), well, you’ve ruined it for the rest of us.

HTC Dream G1 rumored for T-Mobile pre-sale on September 17

Posted by Will on Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 at 6:05 pm under Android, HTC, Linux, Video

Following hot on the heels of the HTC Dream video showing the new HTC-made handset running the oft-speculated Android OS, we’re hearing that T-Mobile is gearing up to offer their customers the HTC Dream on September 17 through pre-sale channels. The pre-sale window falls in line nicely with the expected HTC Dream’s rumored arrival.

The HTC Dream has also been flaunting a new moniker, there’s talk of the Android-powered HTC handset being called the “G1.” We can’t comment on the validity of the G1 model name, but speculation has T-Mobile pushing the “G1″ as their 3G-capable Android handset.

The G1 should be rocking a huge touchscreen (5-inches by 3-inches ?) that should rival (and even out-size) the huge 3.5-inch multi-touch display on the iPhone and iPhone 3G. A working Google Gmail account will apparently be a pre-requisite to using the Android-powered G1’s phone features. And, of course, that slide-out keyboard that we saw in the Android video yesterday will make it easy to tap out longer text messages and emails ont he HTC Dream G1.

T-Mobile will apparently be kicking off pre-sales on September 17 for the incredible price of $150! Apple, in comparison, rocked the wireless industry with their $199 iPhone 3G price-point, so we can only imagine what the $150 price-tag will do for G1 sales. Unfortunately, only current T-Mobile customers will be offered the HTC Dream G1 during the 1-week pre-sale period.

T-Mobile’s up-and-coming 3G network needs a good bit of extra coverage before we can consider the carrier a true 3G provider, so here’s to hoping that T-Mo can increase their 3G footprint before the HTC Dream G1’s launch.

Bring on the HTC Dream G1 with Android! HTC is all about giving Apple a serious run for their money with their Windows Mobile-powered HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro, and with the Android-powered Dream G1 on the horizon, Apple should be shaking in their boots.

So, will you be putting in an order for your own HTC Dream G1 next week?
