One thing that phone hardware enthusiasts (like myself) hate most about adding cases to their handsets is the intrusive bulk that comes with it. So naturally, I’m not a big fan of covering up my phone with full body cases or bumpers, however, this case has altered my strong feelings on the subject matter. The case I’m talking about here is the AI13 from a former Kickstarter company by the name of ‘designed by m’. The AI13 is made with a special AeroSpace Aluminium that feels like a feather in your hand once out of its tin box.

Just to get a better sense of how light it is, when compared to the average aluminum bumper weight of 26 grams; the AL13 weighs almost half of that (14 grams to be exact). As a result, the case keeps the lightweight feel of the iPhone that we all love — it’s truly one elegant piece of material. The lightweight aluminum also prevents major signal loss, as it only drops the signal 5-10 percent, compared to the average 25 percent loss of other aluminium bumpers. I didn’t notice any real drop off in call quality when using my phone.

Putting the bumper on is a joy as well. Most cases or bumpers I’ve tried in the past have always had a janky way of going on the device or coming off. To put on the Al13, all you have to do is simply lay your iPhone 5 down inside the bumper and slide on the back plate: it’s really easy!

Once the Al13 is on, you’ll notice that the front of the phone along with the bezel almost is flush to the bumper case, but the back of the case doesn’t have the same closeness. This could be due to making the iPhone 5 better when it comes to drops, just a guess though. But I would be remissed if I didn’t mention the extras that comes with the Al13. What you get in the tin box is a screen protector for the front and back of the phone, along with a small microfiber-like cloth to wipe blemishes and prints.

Remarkably, the screen protector is no cheaply made plastic that goes over the display, instead it’s an anti-scratch, fingerprint and glare polyurethane screen protector. The protective film is great on the fingers when you’re performing your typical typing and swipe-gestures — it doesn’t feel icky after heavy phone usage.

Carrying my handset around with the bumper didn’t feel like holding a brick, it felt pleasantly light as I alluded to earlier. This allowed me to keep the case on throughout the day unbothered.

In the end, I’d have to say that this is one of the best accessories I’ve ever used. The presentation of the box catches your attention before you see the product, and once you open the box you become even more impressed. Designed by m delivered with this; the Al13 is quality to it’s core.

Al13 comes in five colors and sells for $79.99 here. Photo gallery is below!

Popular Chinese news site Sohu posted these pics of an incredibly resourceful pickpocket stealing an iPhone from a woman on a moving bicycle! These amazing photos were taken in downtown Zhengzhou and instantly became a Chinese web sensation, leading to the perpetrator turning himself in. The thief, dubbed in the Chinese media as “Suit Man” (or, hilariously, “Suit Male” by Google Translate) was caught on camera deftly sniping the cherished device while jogging behind its oblivious owner.

After the images went viral, Suit Male, a man named Wang, turned himself in and probably ended his career as the Best Pickpocket Ever. Like a great sword being interned into stone, he’ll be retiring his chopsticks into the little paper sheath of history.

All that’s left for Wang now is to atone for his two-pronged crime and face the music (which is probably Chopsticks, by the way). I, for one, think a theft this impressive warrants a Get Out of Jail Free card. At very least he deserves a slap on the wrist in exchange for community service. He could teach proper chopstick etiquette to messy kids or maybe Mr. Miyagi style pest control!

All kidding aside, he told a local journalist that he began stealing to support himself and his daughter, who he’s raising as a single parent. So, I almost feel for the guy and I wish him the best despite his mistakes. Hopefully his notoriety will lead to some TV appearances or a job. I see a chopstick brand sponsorship deal in his future! Or not.

Take a look at these pics and have your mind blown below. Truly a master at work, he wields those things like Picasso holding a brush.

And remember, chopsticks are for food and not for criminal activity.

Kickass Startups is back for week number two, our new column showcasing great new mobile products that deserve a boost in coverage. Last time, we covered the new 1 Second Everyday app funded by Kickstarter. Today, we have the Metal Slate line of excellently designed iPhone 5 cases by Spigen SGP. The company is known for having some of the best screen protectors on the market, but their high quality phone cases also deserve quite a bit of praise.

What makes the Metal Slate line so special is its inspiration: Spigen designed these to complement the design of the iPhone 5. You’ll find a lot of two-tone dark cases here like the one above. Others just have the familiar slate color from the black iPhone 5 and some cases are offered in a lighter gray or white color to pair with the white iPhone 5. What you won’t see is any super-heavy duty cases comparable to the Otterbox lines. Instead, the Metal Slate line focuses on elegant design that doesn’t sacrifice on protection.

I happen to own two of the cases found in this line because I love them so much. The Slim Armor TPU/polycarbonate case, one of which I own, comes with two pieces and looks almost exactly like my black iPhone 5. I grabbed it for only $17.99. The other one I have is the bumper style Neo Hybrid Slim Ex, again coming with two pieces (silicone and polycarbonate) for great shock protection especially around the edges. This one also comes with a screen protector and will run you $31.99.

Aside from those, the other four in the series are the Ultra Thin Air, Linear, Crystal Series Linear, and Linear Slim Ex. All of them do an outstanding job preserving the look and feel of Apple’s latest iPhone.

If you’re like me and you are the type of person who loves the iPhone for its remarkable hardware design but feels that most cases often degrade the quality of the design, look no further than Spigen SGP’s Metal Slate line.

Here we go. In something similar to a Rolling Stones song, users find themselves getting no satisfaction with their iPhone 5. Apple’s iPhone 5 is trailing behind four other Android phones when it comes to user satisfaction, according to a new survey conducted by mobile research firm OnDevice Research.

The research firm polled 320,000 smartphone and tablet users in six countries how satisfied they were with their devices. In what seems like a joke, 93,825 folks in the United States ranked the Motorola Atrix HD the best. The Motorola device was then followed by the Droid Razr M, HTC’s Rezound 4G, and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2, with the iPhone 5 coming in fifth. However, in the U.K. Apple’s iPhone 5 came in second behind the HTC One X, which sounds more believable.

On Device Research marketing manager Sarah Quinn believes this is a result of other manufacturers “catching up,” saying:

“Although Apple created one of the most revolutionary devices of the past decade, other manufactures have caught up, with some Android powered devices now commanding higher levels of user satisfaction.”

Overall, Apple doesn’t have a problem on the user satisfaction side, as the company still ranks number one if you count all versions of the iPhone.
