Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s N86 cameraphone isn’t just your run-of-the-mill smartphone with an 8-megapixel camera. With a mechanical shutter, 8-megapixel image sensor, incredible low-light sensitivity and decent shot-to-shot times, the N86 enjoys its place at the head of the cameraphone table. And, it’s now available with full AT&T (NYSE: T) 3G support in the US! Nokia has finally given Americans a chance to own the latest and greatest cameraphone from Espoo, and it’s available online for $469 – Nokia flagship stores in Chicago and New York are asking $499 for the unlocked handset.

There’s a catch, though. The Nokia N86 NAM (North America) will only be available in the Indigo color scheme. The N86 features an 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera (with dual LED flash and autofocus), 2.6-inch AMOLED display, GPS, WiFi and 3G data – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is preparing to release a new firmware update for its camera-flagship N86 8MP. According to AllAboutSymbian, with the new software installed, N86 8MP device owners will have the “Face Detection” option, a completely new feature for Nokia camera-phones.

You know how it works, right? If this option is turned “on,” the camera application will search for faces in the viewfinder and automatically focus on any that it finds.

In addition, we’re hearing the overall photo quality will be improved after the update — meaning better colors and less artifacts.

What we don’t know, however, is the exact release date, but judging by the fact that the first information has been leaked, I’m sure we’ll have more details in a week or so. Stay tuned…

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) doesn’t give up on its older phone models and it’s a good thing. On that note, the Finnish giant unveiled the latest update for its N85 handset. Three of us — Will, Simon and I — had these babies at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, earlier this year, where we use them to instantly share photos with IntoMobile audience.

Anyway, the update packs two important things: USB charging is improved, and once you update you’ll also find that Contacts include Ovi features that allow you to locate your friends and receive updates on what they are doing. You can also chat with your friends and share your favorite places with them. In addition, I assume some of the bugs have been fixed and the phone is now more stable as a result.

To update, simply type *#0000# on the home screen or go to Device Manager. Select “Options” > “Check for updates” and follow the on screen prompts. Alternatively, you can do the same thing through the Nokia Software Updater. As usual, we advise you to backup your phone prior to pushing the trigger…

I’ve waited with this article for quite some time now, trying to find good arguments to suggest our readers to go on and grab the N97, but honestly I couldn’t. Again, this is not to say the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N97 is a bad device – it’s just too expensive for what it offers.

Sure there’s 32GB of built-in storage, but I’m sure people would appreciate more the 4GB version for 200 bucks/euros/pounds less. Unfortunately, that kind of N97 doesn’t exist.

Plus and again unfortunately, that’s not the only bad thing about the N97, as I pointed in my previous article. That keyboard, slow CPU/insufficient RAM, plus the user interface are the main points for NOT buying the device. Keyboard especially, since we all know Nokia knows how to make decent keyboards from their other models such as the E75, E90, E71, and so on. On the same note, from the leaked photos of the so called N97 mini, we see it will come with similar keys which is a bad thing. Waiting for the first Maemo phone is all that high-end Nokia handset users can do at this stage, or at least that’s my take.

Anyway, the summary is – don’t buy the N97! It has all the bells and whistles of the high-end device (GPS, WiFi, compass, 5 megapixel camera, etc), but all that could be made to work in a much better way. Replacing a CPU is one thing that could make a huge difference and make the device respond much faster — but that would kill the margins. This way, Nokia kills its fans, which is a sad thing. Hopefully, the upcoming N900 Rover will be a completely different story — can’t wait to give it a try.

I’ve been using the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N97 for more than a week now. Those who live under the rock should know it’s the Finnish giant’s flagship device for this year, but just how powerful it is – is a different story. In this first article I’ll try to emphasize its top 5 pros and cons. Let’s roll…

Top 5 pros:

1. Great form factor – I always dreamed of having a QWERTY keyboard equipped NSeries device. Adding a touchscreen in the equation made things even better.
2. Solid camera – I consider N97’s competition to be such phones as the HTC Touch Pro and some other Windows Mobile devices with the same form factor. The camera that’s in the N97 leaves the competition far behind thanks to its Carl Zeiss optics.
3. Customizable home screen – at the moment I have my top 4 contacts, top 8 apps, calendar and the current weather information on the N97’s homescreen. All of that is easily accessible with a single press of a screen.
4. Multimedia – NSeries was always strong on multimedia. Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) fan boys are all proud that the iPhone 3GS can take 640×480 video at 30 fps; NSeries device could do that for more than 3 years now, starting with the Nokia N93.
5. Good selection of pre-installed apps – virtually everything you could possibly need comes pre-installed with the device — including mobile office suite (QuickOffice), navigation app (Nokia Maps), browser, and so on. Some things are missing, but that’s in the cons list.

Top 5 cons:

1. Keyboard – you’ve probably heard this before, but unfortunately, it’s worth repeating. The keyboard is awful, and it’s not just because dot and comma share the same key, it’s also the fact that the shift is located in the same part (left) as the D-pad, which BTW I love, making text selection pretty hard, to say the least. I don’t understand why some lower-end devices like the E75 have better keyboards than the company’s flagship phone.
2. Camera – as you can see this is both in my top pros and cons. Don’t get me wrong, I think 5 megapixel camera is enough. But when you think about it, the N95 which was Nokia’s flagship device for 2007 had a camera with same megapixel count. Go figure.
3. Slowness – CPU can’t handle the job properly. I wish things are moving faster, but they are not. Actually, I’m not sure whether it’s CPU thing or lack of RAM (there are 128MB of RAM in the N97), but some things need to change. When I press some button or change the screen orientation, the phone should react immediately.
4. UI/Symbian – although I like the homescreen, UI is everything but intuitive. It’s the small things that annoy me. For some things a single press of an icon is enough, whereas for some others you need to press two times. In addition, when I connect on the WiFi network, I don’t want to be asked on and on about which network should an application use.
5. Ovi Store – this isn’t exactly a bad thing of the N97 per se, but it’s related, nonetheless. For one thing, when I want to customize the homescreen and I click on “Download content,” Ovi Store should show me only those apps which come with homescreen widget. Moreover, Facebook should come pre-installed with the device and the same goes for some weather information application, which comes with a homescreen widget — these, at least, haven’t come pre-installed on the N97 I got.

UPDATE: Facebook app comes pre-installed on the Nokia N97, it just wasn’t there on the one I got!

That’s about all I had to say for this post. I’ll leave my final judgment for the final article. Stay tuned in the meantime…

Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s WOM World was nice enough to send me the N97 for a review. As usual, first comes the unboxing. It’s “Fight Night” at the IntoMobile Mobile Battle Arena! The two enterprise smartphone heavyweights from Taiwan and Finland are going head-to-head in a battle for smartphone supremacy. Will the HTC Touch Pro2 “The 1-2-3 From HTC” manage to knock out the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N97 “The Finn-isher”? It’s going to be a close fight. Let’s take a look at our two smartphone contenders!

The HTC Touch Pro2 takes its new place at the top of HTC’s Windows Mobile smartphone portfolio. The Touch Pro2 basically takes the original HTC Touch Pro’s recipe for a true business-class Windows Mobile smartphone and spices it up with an extra helping of processing power and a much larger touchscreen display. As the baddest WinMo handset in the Taiwanese smartphone maker’s stable, HTC blessed the Touch Pro2 with all the latest and greatest smartphone features on the market. It’s got a class-leading 3.6-inch WVGA (800×480) resistive touchscreen display, 3.2-megapixel camera, 3G data connection (HSPA), WiFi, GPS, a Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) MSM7200A 528 MHz CPU, and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard – ensuring the HTC Touch Pro2 comes ready to play with in the big leagues.

But, there’s always two sides to every story. On the one hand, we have the power-packed HTC Touch Pro2 aiming to take as much marketshare in the enterprise segment. On the other hand, we have Nokia looking to hold on to as much of its business customer-base with the power-packed Nokia N97. As an Nseries smartphone, you can bet your donkey that the N97 sports all the highest-tech features from the Espoo. Nokia has built a reputation for themselves with smartphones that boast some of the most-advanced hardware on the planet, and the Nokia N97 is no exception. Underneath the N97’s heavy-set exterior lies a 5-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera (with flash), 3G data connectivity, WiFi, GPS, 32GB of on-board storage, slide-n-tilt QWERTY keyboard and a speedy ARM11-based processor clocked at 434Mhz. And, the 3.5-inch resistive touchscreen display boasts near-HD resolutions, which makes for a dandy video-viewing experience. True to Nokia’s tradition, the Nokia N97 sets the standard for high-end smartphone feature-sets.

Both handsets offer comparable feature sets and don’t necessarily have any major usability issues. Both handsets feature slide-and-tilt touchscreens. Both smartphones have QWERTY keyboards. Both the HTC Touch Pro2 and Nokia N97 rock high-resolution displays paired to awkward mobile operating systems. We could keep going, but you get the picture.

So, which smartphone is the better choice? How does the HTC Touch Pro2 compare to the Nokia N97 in terms of a satisfying user experience? Watch the two smartphone heavyweights duke it out below!

Specifications (specs) - Decision: HTC

The HTC Touch Pro2 wins the first round of the heavyweight battle. The Nokia N97 bests the HTC Touch Pro when it comes to 3G connectivity options (tri-band vs. dual-band), camera (5MP Carl Zeiss vs. 3.2MP), and FM radio. But, when it comes to usable specs, the Touch Pro2 is the clear winner. With a faster processor, loads more RAM and ROM and a much higher-resolution display, the Pro2 is a better choice… even without a 3.5mm headphone jack.

After the N97 has been launched, it’s time Nokia (NYSE: NOK) focuses on its first 8 megapixel camera-equipped baby – N86 8MP. We’ve seen the device being announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and even saw it passing the FCC hurdle, meaning that the launch is closer than we think. Support pages are live, too, hinting us it’s all about the timing now. The N86 8MP runs Symbian S60 3.2 (Feature pack 2), the platform Nokia knows so well, so I don’t expect them to wait for long before they send out the “you can buy the N86 8MP now” release. The time has come and Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced that their highly anticipated N97 smartphone (they call it “mobile computer”) will begin selling this month in more than 75 countries.

We’ve already talked about the N97 for quite a few times. Let me recap quickly – this baby has everything you could ever need including HSPA, WiFi, 3.5-inch nHD touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, GPS, 5 megapixel camera with integrated Carl Zeiss optics, 32GB of built-in storage memory, microSD slot… you name it. Moreover, the device is tightly integrated with an array of Ovi services, and also comes pre-loaded with the Ovi Store client allowing seamless addition of new apps.

The pricing was not unveiled in the press release, so we’re guessing it will wary by market…

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has actually unveiled the updated firmware version for its N96 model before they did the same for the N79 and N85. Yeah, we missed it, but it’s here now, nonetheless.

As usual, the latest firmware fixes many of the known bugs from the previous firmware, ensuring the device is more stable than before. In addition, some of the existing applications are updated, and there are also some new apps included with the firmware upgrade.

For instance:

• Nokia Email client and Mail for Exchange (MfE) is now preloaded on the device
• Settings Wizard has reached version 5.0
• Active Standby Email Plug-in is included to show new emails on Active Standby screen
• Audio Themes are supported
• Slideshow can be used as wallpaper
• WiFi Protected Setup
• Support of IAD (Independent Application Delivery) – allows certain apps to be updated independently over the air.

And the list goes on. You can get the full release log from Spazio Cellulare… As always, we advise you to push the trigger and update your N96.

It seems Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s flagship smartphone, N97, is heading to North America on June 2nd. That doesn’t mean you’ll be able to buy it on that day, that’s the shipping date for the Finnish giant’s distributors.

Apparently, they [Nokia] notified one of their major American partners of the estimated N97 NAM shipping date, and I guess they’ll be eager to start selling it as soon as they can. To make things clear, we’re talking about the version of the device with all the right bands to sing along AT&T (NYSE: T)’s and Rogers (NYSE: RCI) Wireless’ 3G networks.

Pre-orders have already started on some web stores, Nokia USA’s site included, so we’re kinda sure you’ll be able to grab your N97 unit in June, though we’re not sure whether it’s beginning, middle or the end of the month. As soon as we hear something new, we’ll let you know, k?

Unlike the kickstand sound on the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N96, the one used in the upcoming Nokia N86 8MP is “active.” Once opened, it starts a Kickstand app, allowing users to browse photos, maps, contacts, web, music; or check check their email — all from a comfort of their chair while Nokia’s 8 megapixel shooter stands on a desk nearby, entertaining them. Pretty cool huh?

I guess by now we know enough about the N86 8MP, so it’s about time the Finnish giant starts selling these babies. We can’t wait to try one for ourselves.

Bad news folks. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) keeps saving on hardware even in its high-end devices. The soon-to-be-released Nokia N97 will sport the single ARM11 CPU with clock speed at 434 MHz — i.e. no dedicated GPU. And while this is faster than the CPU used in the 5800 XM (369 MHz), it’s still kinda disappointing.

I know there are some folks out there who’ll argue that CPU is not the only component to look for and I somewhat agree with this claim. However, if we look at the upcoming Samsung Omnia HD, we’ll see that the Korean giant has a different (better, I think) approach. For its flagship Symbian handset, Samsung used the ARM Cortex-A8 600 MHz processor (some sites even suggest it’s 800 MHz) and a dedicated 3D graphics accelerator! Don’t tell me it won’t run faster than the N97, cause it MUST!

I do understand having high margins is very lucrative for Nokia, but c’mon. We’re talking about a very high end of the spectrum here. Does Nokia wants to lose its fan boys? Any thoughts?

Adding the HTC Magic is obviously not enough for Italy’s TIM. They decided to follow the footsteps of Vodafone by including the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N97 in their offering, too. The problem, however, is the price — HTC Magic will be available for 449 EUR, while Nokia’s flagship device will be sold for whooping 150 EUR more. If we would compare the two devices in an “apples to apples” manner, that would mean that QWERTY keyboard costs 150 EUR, which is kinda ridiculous. On the other hand, we’re talking about two different platforms, each having its loyal followers.

Finally, I’m guessing the current steep price is for hard-core Nokia fanboys and will go down with the time. We’ll see…

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has released a new firmware upgrade for its N78 smartphone. The update fixes a number of bugs and glitches found in the previous firmware v20.149. The detailed change log is not available at the moment, but as always we advise you to keep your devices up to date (and to backup your data prior to doing so).

To grab the latest firmware, you can either use Nokia Software Updater desktop software or do everything from the phone itself. In the latter case, go to “Tools” > “Utilities” > “Device Manager.” Once there, select “Options,” “Check for updates,” and then follow the instructions provided on the screen. If you opt to update your N78 over the air, make sure you’re using a WiFi connection to save some bandwidth costs — that’s in case if you’re not on an unlimited data plan.
