UK: eXpansys: Elan Digital Systems Mobidapter

mobiadaptor UK: eXpansys: Elan Digital Systems MobidapterI like crossover gadgets – those that are able to bridge one or two uses, and make a good fist of it at the same time – that’s why I was really interested to see the Elan System Mobidapter, being retailed by eXpansys.

The device works like a vampire USB stick, sucking the files off your device – now if you were wondering where it plugs in, that would be on the SD-based memory port that your device needs to have. It’s pictured here working with MicroSD, but I’m assured with adaptors it can cover the other SD variants too.

Fascinatingly, the onboard intelligence allows you to transfer files to and from your device, with the device thinking the Mobidapter is a SD card, whilst in fact it’s just bridging to a USB pen drive – frighteningly simple, desvastatingly clever.

Of course there are some limitations about the positioning of your SD card variant port, and also the fact you’ve actually even got one of those ports on your device – but an increasing number are coming with them now, as it’s getting to be kinda standard.

Overall, nice job I think – some of the best ideas are the simple ones!

tech 21 iband UK: eXpansys: Tech21 iBand, as seen on Dragons Den

If you watch the BBC1 TV programme Dragons’ Den in the UK (or I guess one of the other franchises round the world), you’ll know that inventors/entrepreneurs roll up and try and get the Dragons’ (read: rich people) to invest in their businesses. Last night, there was a business that was promoting shock protection for laptops, mobile devices, etc.

One of those products was the Tech21 iBand (pictured above):

iBand: impact protection for your iPhone 3G or 3G S
The Tech21 iBand is constructed from d3oT, an intelligent protective material that transforms from a soft, flexible gel, to a shock-absorbent casing on impact.
Used by extreme sports brands and professional athletes from around the world, d3oT offers unique impact protection for your iPhone 3G or 3G S.
The clever bit.?At rest, the molecules inside d3oT move freely, making it soft and flexible, while at the point of impact or shock, the molecules lock together to spread and absorb the force, safeguarding your iPhone 3G or 3G S in a protective layer.
Full functional access? With full access to all ports and controls, the iBand offers a slimline and stylish way to safeguard your iPhone 3G or 3G S, while you enjoy full functionality. Benefit from the ultimate, revolutionary protective shield for your iPhone 3G or 3G S, without compromising its sleek design.
Did you know??The protective d3oT material transforms from a soft, flexible gel to a shock-absorbent casing on impact.

UK: Mobile Wi-Fi – coming soon to 3…

By Ben Robinson on Sunday, August 9th, 2009 at 1:06 PM PST
In Three, UK News, UK Retail

3 mobile wifi UK: Mobile Wi Fi – coming soon to 3…

3UK will launch a Mobile Wi-Fi service – also known as MiFi® – in time for Christmas this year, allowing you to use Wi-Fi wherever you can access the 3 network with a small wireless modem. The wireless modem sends out a Wi-Fi signal so that you can connect a range of Wi-Fi enabled devices to the internet without the need for wires or a USB connection. No fixed-line is needed; customers simply require 3’s 3G coverage to connect.

The wireless modem – smaller than your average mobile phone at just 86 x 45 x 10 mm – allows you to create your own personal mobile Wi-Fi connection. You can connect multiple devices to the internet at the same time so while you are checking e-mails on a netbook, you can also download a track from iTunes onto your iPod touch.

Set-up is simple.  No software installation is required. Simply switch on the wireless modem and connect to the Mobile Internet using a Wi-Fi signal.  A Wi-Fi enabled device will automatically pick up the signal and ask for an eight-digit network key which you will be asked to input just once for every new device you want to connect.

Like other Wi-Fi style services in markets across the world, Mobile Wi-Fi from 3 is an ideal solution for both consumer and business use. It offers the UK market the most flexible and convenient way to get online since the arrival of the Mobile Broadband dongle over 2 years ago.

Marc Allera, Sales & Marketing Director at 3 UK says, “There are millions of Wi-Fi devices out there, but they can only be used in fixed locations. Consumer demand for easy and affordable internet access on the go is growing fast and we’re responding to that by announcing the UK’s first wireless modem. Using Mobile Wi-Fi from 3, consumers can connect to the internet wherever they have a 3 signal, whether at home or on the move. They can download a track onto their iPod touch, or tweet their latest updates to their mates, or both. Either way it’s simple to set-up, without the need for wires.”

Mobile Wi-Fi, also known as MiFi®, will come to 3 in time for Christmas 2009.  Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

UK: Sony Xperia X1 retailing at nice price…

xperia x1 UK: Sony Xperia X1 retailing at nice price...

eXpansys have just emailed me to tell me that they are now retailing the Sony Xperia X1 for £374.99 now, and are throwing a £20 voucher in to the mix as well!

Now with that £20 you could get a car charger or Bluetooth speakerphone – both by Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) also – or you could just stash it and spend it later when you get the gadget urge again!

Of course, the other option is that you could take a look at the HTC Hero, which is another great device – eXpansys are retailing this for £399.99, with a £30 voucher! So now you have options, and assuming you have £400 spare, that’s a nice choice to have to make!
