Well, well, well. Look who came crawlin’ back.

Well, not really crawling; it’s awesome having Stefan back. This week we’ve managed to wrestle time zone issues down and got the prodigal son, Stefan Constantinescu, to get on the weekly podcast. Considering his time at Nokia (NYSE: NOK), we go over the N97 a fair bit in preparation for our head-to-head review with the Touch Pro 2. The Android-powered Hero gets sufficiently gushed over, as well as the introduction of HTC’s Sense user interface.

We’ve got a fresh giveaway this week - you might have seen Ben writing about Vuzix here, there and everywhere, and now we’ve got a pair to give away! Drinkspiration for iPhone Helps you Pick 4th. of July Boozamahol

Vodka veteran Absolut has just released a free iPhone app that suggests drinks depending on a wide variety of criteria, like time of day, mood, type of liquor, occasion, and lots of others. After picking one, it even includes instructions on how to mix one up. As a reference alone, that’s a pretty sweet app, but you can even tweet and update your Facebook status about what you’re drinking. (Hey, some people even blog about their drinks.) GPS integration also lets you see what’s being drunk in your area and around the world. Fine timing on the launch, considering Independence Day is tomorrow… Interested? Best Buy Mobile Reveals TELUS HTC Snap and Touch Pro2 as ‘Coming Soon’

One more tidbit of Canadian mobile news before I take a breather over here. Best Buy Mobile has confirmed that the TELUS (NYSE: TU) HTC Snap and HTC Touch Pro2 are ‘coming soon’. Rumored pricing to purchase the HTC Snap outright is sitting at $449.99, while the Touch Pro2 is coming in at $549.99.

No launch details for the Snap or Touch Pro2 were revealed, but in the flyer above, all details within are ‘good until July 30th’. So, chances are we’ll see all 3 of these devices before then. In fact, the TELUS BlackBerry Tour is scheduled to drop on July 15th (starting at $249.99 on a 3-year contract), so we could very well see all three devices launched on that date. That said, I’d lean more towards a solo Tour launch on the 15th, with the Snap and Touch Pro2 coming sometime between the 16th and the 31st. We’ll see!

Samsung ‘Link’ Coming to Bell July 15th?

Here’s the latest rumor from the land of Canadian mobile. Word has it that Samsung lovers in the Great White North are in for a treat. Samsung is set to release the ‘Link’ via Bell on July 15th. Not much else is known at this point (no pricing or device specs), but as you can see from the amazing image above (can you feel the sarcasm?), the Link will at the very least feature a full QWERTY keyboard. No slider here.

Stay tuned for more on the Samsung Link… I’m very interested to learn more about this one!

Facebook for iPhone 3.0 Coming Soon

Facebook for iPhone is awesome. Anyone that has used it usually raves about it, as It makes interacting with the site ultra-easy (and fun)… and I have to admit, I pop it open once a day just to see what’s going on. Awesomely, (Is that a word!?) Facebook has announced that the new Facebook for iPhone 3.0 is nearing completion, and we should see it available for download in the near future. Look for enhancements such as a new homescreen, new notes and events pages, plus an updated news feed. Also, and probably much more noteworthy, Facebook for iPhone 3.0 could very well let you create photo albums, upload photos, zoom photos, tag photos, and a lot more. Stay tuned for more on this. It’s coming soon… I can feel it.

Concept: The Booze Powered Cell Phone aka ‘Cheers’

Now how cool is this concept… This is a device I could take out to the lake with me!

This ‘Cheers’ mobile phone concept by Tryi Yeh is truly one of a kind. The device is powered by a green alcohol-cell, which would be much more energy efficient according to the designer. There’s also a function button on the top of the device which allows you to easily access any of the phone’s functions. This one would be all touchscreen as well, with no buttons to speak of other than the function button/booze cap on the top of the device.

‘Cheers’ to Tryi on this one. Never seen anything like this before… and I want one… ‘What are you talking about officer!? Nah, that’s my cell phone!’

Awhile back we had heard rumblings that Rolando 2 was coming to the iPhone very soon… I had actually almost forgotten about it, until last night when we received an email about it. Yes, thankfully, Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid is now available in the App Store! It’ll set you baak $9.99, but in my opinion, it’s one of the best puzzle/strategy games out there.

No ‘Lite’ version of the game is available just yet, but I would not be surprised if one pops up in the near future. The original Rolando game spawned a free version as well, but it appeared some time after original release. So, if $9.99 is a little too rich for your blood, just hang on… a free version may become available.

Former Intel CEO Craig Barrett: Will be a few years before you see anything useful from Nokia deal

Way to crush people’s dreams Craig. Just over a week ago I live blogged the Intel-Nokia (NYSE: NOK) conference call where they announced they’ll be working together to create a new class of devices and usher in an era of unprecedented connectivity. Former Intel CEO Craig Barrett was in Helsinki yesterday and he told Retuers that “we will have to wait a few years to see if the deal is successful.”

Not one, not a couple, but a few. I’m not surprised really, an Intel Atom processor still consumes an order of magnitude more than the equivalent ARM processor, just keep your expectations in check. Don’t expect to see Intel based smartphones for a long, long time. 2011 we may see high end models, but 2012 is more likely.

ZTE Coral 200FM hits the FCC: First solar phone to come to America?

ZTE, the Chinese handset maker who makes devices for operators world wide and has a nice chunk of market share in China, has submitted the Coral 200FM to the FCC for approval. It’s a budget device, specs are unknown, but the thing that stands out is the solar panel on the back. We heard about this thing back during Mobile World Congress, and people said it would be nothing by vaporware. Looks like they’re wrong.

The Nokia (NYSE: NOK) E75 is the first Nokia to feature a slide out QWERTY keyboard, it is also the first Eseries device to run S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 and feature a 3.5 mm headphone jack. It has WiFi, GPS, a 2.4 inch 320 x 240 resolution screen, 3.2 megapixel camera and if you want to know more check out the product page. When it launched it came in black, and now they’ve added a red version. There should be more colors coming out, when I was testing the device it came in … wait I don’t think I can tell you that

Don’t mind the fancy suit case, you’re not going to get that. It’s all a part of Nokia’s blogger out reach program to stir buzz. It’s on Amazon.com for $450 by the way, the USA version.

HTC Hero with AT&T 3G bands is at the FCC!

The super sexy HTC Hero is at the FCC’s labs. We’re talking about the version of the device that can sing along AT&T (NYSE: T)’s and Canada’s Rogers (NYSE: RCI) Wireless 3G networks. The question is will AT&T pick it up? They have a good relationship with Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), which might be pissed to see such a contender being offered by their carrier partner. On the other hand, AT&T shouldn’t want to miss the Android wave, hence we may see them start offering the Hero alongside the iPhone.

Anyway, that’s something we’re still speculating on. The good thing is that the paperwork needed for launching the Heroic launch in the States is getting close to an end, and you’ll always be able to grab the device unlocked, sans any strings attached.

NTT DoCoMo to launch PayPal-like service on July 21st

NTT DoCoMo (NYSE: DCM) is joining the mobile money market with its own remittance service. Starting from July 21st, individual users (as opposed to corporate customers) of the carrier’s i-mode service will be able to remit up to 20,000 yen (about $208) per transfer by simply inputting the payee’s mobile phone number. The payee then receives a mail notification on its mobile phone and is given the option of depositing the money in a domestic bank account or having the amount credited to their monthly phone bill. The payee can receive remittances totaling up to 200,000 yen (about $2,080) per month.

Best of all, the service doesn’t require any registration or opening of a specific bank account!

Cost wise, the charges per payment (including consumption tax) will be 105 yen for the payer and 65 yen for the payee. The payee is not charged, however, if the remittance is deposited into a Mizuho Bank account or credited to their monthly phone bill.

Archos to unveil Android-powered Tablet on September 15th?

We’ve already heard Archos is moving forward to introduce the Android-powered device. Now we have a new tidbit of information to add to the pile.

According to RegisterHardware, the company’s Managing Director of Northern Europe operations — Tony Limrick — has confirmed such device will be unveiled this September. As a matter of fact, he said it’s September 15th when we’ll hear some hot news from Archos.

Limrick described the upcoming Tablet as “Android-based devices with phone, email, Google (NSDQ: GOOG) apps and Android Apps.”

Earlier we’ve heard the specs and are hoping they’ll stay intact: 5-inch screen, HSPA connectivity, 500MB of storage, 10mm thick, HD movie playback capability and 800MHz TI OMAP 3440 CPU. The price is unknown at this stage, but judging by the specs, I doubt we’re talking about a cheap device.

Pikkoo’s Live Screensavers go live, with Foreca being their first partner

The folks behind Pikkoo, the company which presented its offering at the recently ended Mobile 2.0 Europe in Barcelona, sent me an email to inform me about the official launch of their Live Screensaver concept, which allows streaming of information to mobile devices without ever pushing a button.

Their first live screensaver is launched in partnership with Foreca, Finnish digital weather service company, with which they’ve developed Foreca Live Weather Screensaver. The application/screensaver brings up-to-date, geographic-specific weather information of 140,000 locations worldwide to mobile screensavers.

Personally I find this kind of screensaver extremely useful, as I check for weather conditions about once a day. Using Foreca Live Weather Screensaver, I would be reminded on the weather even when I’m not doing anything on my phone.

Finally, in case you’re wondering, Pikkoo’s live screensavers rely on Adobe Flash Lite technology, which works on quite a few phones today…

EpicTilt’s TapStar wants to take the thunder from Tap Tap Revenge

EpicTilt is out with an interesting iPhone/iPod Touch game called TapStar, which aims to get some love from the Tap Tap Revenge fans.

Their trick is offering the exclusive music content from Sony Music, including tunes from such artists as Britney Spears, John Mayer, Pink, TLC and Warrant Heaven. Of course, there’s also an option to buy a song you’re currently playing from the iTunes, and if proves successful, it’s fair to guess other labels will jump on board as well.

As for the gameplay, it’s slightly different that the likes of Guitar Hero - there are four corner buttons you should touch when an arrow appears. Then the “classic” part comes in as the accuracy of your taps are measured and number of sequential hits you can pull off will power your high score…

ABI Research: Worldwide mobile services revenue to grow at least 1.2% annually through 2014

Despite the looming recession, a new ABI Research study shows that even under the worst recovery scenarios, mobile services revenues will continue to grow at nearly 1.2% through 2014, which is a 0.5% loss over pre-crisis conditions.

According to ABI’s practice director Dan Shey, a long economic recovery places pressures on mobile operators to compete on price, and mobile data services allow them to counter that pressure. However, since each region is different, operators should create strategies that lead customers to maintain ‘nice-to-have’ data services or encourage addition of more utilitarian ones.

North America has been hit hardest, but mobile data services growth will exceed 8% through 2014 even in the worst recovery scenario. As for the Asia Pacific region, operators there derive a large portion of their data revenues from content downloads, and these products would be the first casualties of an extended recession.

Shey went on to add: “Mobile operators need to stress the utility of mobile services and pursue appropriate services personalization initiatives that allow customers to buy and use services in ways that best suit their needs. Business customers should also be a target segment as businesses consider mobile a way to lower costs and increase competitiveness.”

ABI Research’s “World Financial Crisis and the Mobile Services Market” combines survey data with regional economic and mobile demographic factors, providing a quantitative view of potential changes in the mobile services market based on three possible economic recovery scenarios… More information is available from ABI’s website.

GyPSii secures “friend finding” patent in the EU

GyPSii has announced that it has secured EU-wide “friend finding” patent, which describes the transmission of location-based information between devices and the subsequent publishing of that information for viewing on a map.

From the press release:

This significant Friend Finding patented technology enables GyPSii users to locate and share information with friends to view on a map, and further protects intellectual property enabling key features such as pushing user generated place content or requesting a friend’s location so they can meet-up, on mobile devices. The company uses the patented technology in the friend finding capability to allow users to share their location over a mobile device. Users can request or share their location and a favorite place location with one or many friends, from mobile device to mobile device, and view the location on a map on the device(s).

GyPSii’s announcement goes on suggesting this is only the first of 6 patent technologies they have developed. This capability can also be applied in other uses such as Fleet Management, Field Operations and Emergency Services.

Now, the question is how this will impact other mobile social networks. Will GyPSii start suing other services that use the same approach? “Waiting and seeing” all we can do at this stage. I only hope it won’t negatively impact the industry…

Offerpal Media, Tapjoy team-up to better serve iPhone developers, help them monetize their apps

Another day, another “monetize your iPhone apps” news. This time, it’s Offerpal Media — the company behind the popular monetization platform for social networks, online games, virtual worlds and mobile applications — and Tapjoy — developers of the Tapjoy SDK and such popular iPhone games as TapDefense, TapSudoku and TapWord — which announced partnership designed to provide iPhone application developers with “tools to help them monetize their applications through the sale of virtual goods.”

The new solution is already available as part of Tapjoy’s free SDK, allowing developers to integrate Offerpal’s “Managed Offer Platform” as a native part of the user experience. Moreover, and that’s I guess the main point of the joint solution, is the ability for developers to grow their apps quickly through rewarded installs of active mobile gamers across the Tapjoy network of millions of users.

TracFone launches new sub brand: StraightTalk w/ no contract unlimited voice+sms for $45/month

TracFone, a prepaid mobile virtual network operator in the United States who peddles to drug dealers and illegal immigrants, just launched a new sub brand called “StraightTalk.” Prepaid never really was big in America, while in Europe and Asia it is the way a majority of users consume, but with the economy in a nose dive, and The New York Times stating today that unemployment has hit the highest levels in 26 years at 9.5%, people will want to control their spending.

For $45 per month, with no contract, you get unlimited voice, unlimited SMS, unlimited 411 and 30 MB of data. That is what I call a steal. If it still isn’t cheap enough for you, you can opt for the $30/month plan which provides 1000 minutes, 1000 texts, 30 MB of data, and unlimited 411.

This isn’t prepaid how I’ve grown to know and love it in Europe. In many of the countries I’ve been to and picked up prepaid SIM cards, you load the card with credit and then when you reach closer and closer to zero remaining credit, you top up your SIM card. With StraightTalk you pay a monthly fee, regardless if you use your mobile phone or not. That $45 will get you unlimited voice and SMS for 30 days, after that you have to pay another $45. In Finland if I go on vacation in a cottage and don’t touch my phone except to send a few text messages, I pay for those few text messages and that’s it. If I was on StraightTalk, I just wasted $45.

There will be taxes and other fees, so who knows how high that $45 will really become, and you can only choose from a Motorola (NYSE: MOT) W385, Motorola RAZR V3A or LG200, but still, this is crazy cheap for America in terms of rates per month.
