Well, well, well. Look who came crawlin’ back.

Well, not really crawling; it’s awesome having Stefan back. This week we’ve managed to wrestle time zone issues down and got the prodigal son, Stefan Constantinescu, to get on the weekly podcast. Considering his time at Nokia (NYSE: NOK), we go over the N97 a fair bit in preparation for our head-to-head review with the Touch Pro 2. The Android-powered Hero gets sufficiently gushed over, as well as the introduction of HTC’s Sense user interface.

We’ve got a fresh giveaway this week - you might have seen Ben writing about Vuzix here, there and everywhere, and now we’ve got a pair to give away! It’s funny what people will line up for these days, isn’t it?

So yeah, there was a lot of noise about the iPhone 3G S this week, but all of the other big names were sure to crowd the day with their own launches to shoulder their way into the spotlight. RIM let loose the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) 9630 Tour, Samsung unloaded five handsets in a remarkable display of confusion, and LG also squeezed out an E71ish device this week. Will and I also go over the rash of augmented reality apps that were popping up and the role of magnetic compasses in the proliferation of similar types of apps. You might have heard that we gave away three iPhone 3G Ses (in gift certificate form) to some lucky readers this week - this go-round we’re catching our breath and giving away some IntoMobile t-shirts to three lucky readers. The Signal Podcast #28: iPhone 3Gs Launch and the Pre’s Next Steps

The new iPhone 3GS demands a lot of attention, but Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre, anyone?

Of course the hype of WWDC wasn’t exactly justified with the iPhone 3GS’ modest, incremental upgrades, but who’ll complain about a new iPhone, especially with the price cuts to the original iPhone? Will and I also run down what’s happening with Verizon and their supposed claim to the Palm Pre in 2010, as well as how the Eos’ future depends on its performance. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) gets some time in the limelight, as we patiently await the N97 in the mail and jealously glance at other reviews floating around.

Magic is in the air up north, and so is swine flu.

Simon’s back after a nasty run-in with a non-pork-related flu, and managed to rally in time to go to the Rogers (NYSE: RCI)’ HTC Magic and Dream launch event in Toronto. Android sure took its sweet time coming to Canada, so Will and I speculate a bit on the timing and iPhone considerations, but lots of other news went down over the last two weeks. AT&T (NYSE: T)’s ‘09 lineup got completely spilled, and we run down some of the new handsets, like the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Magnum and some frumpy-looking Nokias. Of course, the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre launches tomorrow on Sprint (NYSE: S), and we take one last stab at how the stock situation will affect the launch, as well as consider some of the early reviews.

We can only hope that stock will build up over the following weeks. ‘Twitter Girl’ proves a Twitter song can be badass

Twitter is big. Really, trust me, it’s huge. If you’ve got a smartphone in your hands, you’re probably about to tweet this very post. This Twitter-craze has spawned way too many songs about Twitter. Some are funny, some, not so much. I like them, don’t get me wrong, but I wouldn’t be caught pumping myself up for a Saturday night out by blasting Dave Ryder’s Tweetaholic.

It’s a great listen to be sure, but there’s something about a Twitter song that just isn’t, for lack of a better word, “cool.”

At least that’s what I thought.

It was fitting that Twitter users got a preview look at Twitter Girl over the weekend.

I first heard this song in its early stages, and it changed my mind about Twitter songs. By the time Producer and Writer Michael Copon was done polishing the track to a pop-lockin’ spit-shine, it blew my mind!

Alright, enough with the hype. Allow me to give you an exclusive first-look at the Twitter song that proves that a song about a micro-blogging social network actually can be “badass” - Twitter Girl, by Chadb and Michael Copon (@MichaelCopon).

Congratulations on MMS and cut/paste, iPhone. Welcome to five years ago.

Aw, sorry, is that a bit snide? In all honesty, iPhone 3.0 was a pretty big deal and Will and I sum up our impressions in this week’s podcast. There’s a lot going on in the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) world, including the 9630 Niagara, the 8325 Curve and the contentious BlackBerry 9900. We had heard of a Bold with a touchscreen named Magnum, but this is the first we’ve seen of it, however some think it’s just a big hoax, based on spotting the old 8800 microphone. What do you say? Seriously, we’ve got Quickfire taken off shelves, the Bold is warming up, even the iPhone is on fire! Regardless, the biggest thing happening this week is the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) App World, but Will and I do chat about Motorola (NYSE: MOT), and how they’re recession woes versus Nokia (NYSE: NOK). Two new phones, the Versa and 8 GB Renoir caught our eye as well, and generated some good discussion about design versus horsepower. Nervous exhaustion, shmervous exhaustion. Here’s the year’s busiest week of mobile news.

Mobile World Congress has come and gone, in case you haven’t noticed our live-from-Barcelona coverage, and it’s time to rein it all in and figure out what actually happened. There’s a ton of new devices that were on display from most major manufacturers (sorry, RIM and Motorola (NYSE: MOT)), and too many solutions providers to keep track of. We have the prolific Dusan Belic joining us this episode, which is a rare treat indeed - before MWC, we’ve never been in the same time zone, let alone room! HTC TouchFLO 3D walkthrough video - New and improved!

Let it never be said that HTC rests on their laurels.

With the HTC Touch Pro 2 and HTC Touch Diamond 2’s official announcement earlier this week, HTC is pushing ahead in the Windows Mobile smartphone market that they helped shape over the past several years. But, rather than push out new hardware with the same old (if you can call it that) TouchFLO 3D UI that has proved so successful in HTC’s current WinMo smartphone lineup, HTC has endowed the Touch Pro 2 and Touch Diamond 2 with a tweaked version of TouchFLO 3D that adds more features while speeding up the interface.

On this, the last day of the Mobile World Congress, HTC was good enough to give us a demonstration of the refreshed TouchFLO 3D UI. Right off the bat, we noticed that TouchFLO 3D loaded much more quickly on both the Pro 2 and Diamond 2 than we’re used to seeing on the current HTC Touch Pro and Diamond. Scrolling through TouchFLO 3D reveals a new “Stocks” tab to help you keep track of your investments. The “Mail” pane serves up email previews that make it easier for a user to decide whether or not a new email is worth reading. The new TouchFLO 3D also allows the user to remove and rearrange TouchFLO 3D tabs to their liking - HTC listened when customers complained about not being able to customize TouchFLO 3D’s tabs, and the result is a completely configurable homescreen.

As part of HTC’s new “people-centric” approach to the contacts list, you’ll find that the “People” tab now integrates all the communications from a particular contact - email, text messages and call history are all gathered in one convenient place. And, because it can be a hassle to wait for frequently-visited webpages to load, HTC is backing a new feature they call “Push Internet.” While nothing is really being “pushed” to the handset, the new TouchFLO feature will download (pre-fetch, if you will) data from websites that you specify at customizable intervals. The idea is to have all the web-site data ready and cached so that when you go to visit your favorite page, you don’t have to wait for the browser to load the page. And, as an added bonus, “Push Internet” allows for offline viewing of webpages.

Man, Mobile World Congress is coming up soon…

We’ve got the last two weeks’ worth of phone news, and they’ve been busy weeks! Obviously a lot of companies are gearing up for the year’s biggest show in mobile - plenty of pictures of Windows Mobile 6.5 have surfaced, as well as Android developers busily working on the Cupcake update. We also talk a bit about Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) claiming multitouch… what will it mean to Palm (NSDQ: PALM) and its beloved Pre?

It has been a long CES hangover week, but this episode should be the final purging…

CES might have been a bit smaller and underwhelming than previous years, but the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre made it worth the trip to Las Vegas this go-around. Will and I talk about the Pre as well as some other key announcements, such as microSD XC pacing the way to 2 TB memory cards, LG’s watch phone, and a few other stories following in the wake of CES. The Mobile World Conference is a scant month away, and should provide us with even more news for the mobile world.

The Signal: Talking Mobile Memory with SanDisk

Our last interview at CES was with Chris Loh and Mike Yurochko from the mammoth of mobile memory, SanDisk. They remained somewhat tightlipped about the 2 terabyte cards announced on the SD Association’s roadmap, but we talked broadly about what bigger memory cards mean for end consumers and developers. Mike and I talked in the second half about how SlotMusic is doing, and apparently one of Rhianna’s latest albums enjoyed 6% of its sales through the new microSD format. It might not be replacing CDs or online distribution any time soon, but options are always good to have. Now, the sound quality wasn’t great for the interview since my voice recorder mysteriously disappeared come showtime, but it did conveniently provide a chance to test out my brand new 16 GB microSD card on the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM). Happily, Voice Notes did the job admirably - run time is just a bit over ten minutes.

The Wi-Fi Alliance could easily be overlooked in a show ostensibly about the shiny finished products that they’re only tangentially involved with, but one of the big things we wanted to do with our interviews was get in touch with some of the big movers behind the scenes. Wi-Fi is becoming a ubiquitous feature throughout mobile, and with Windows 7 beta touting a wealth of home interconnectivity, it’ll play an even bigger part of our daily lives. Kelly Davis-Felner from the Wi-Fi Alliance talks to us about their work with emerging brands and carrier pressures on manufacturers. Just a little over five minutes, so take a listen.
