Could Windows Mobile really be catching up?

Between the opening of the Marketplace for Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1, and some leaks about the upcoming version 7, it sounds like Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) is getting ready for a big push. Will is out judging Under the Radar, but we tap Windows Mobile blogger and Microsoft MVP Darren Humphries from MobileJaw for his take on the platform in the face of fresh competition on the smartphone circuit. We also talk about legal squabbles between carriers over “misleading” ads.

Of course, we never want to leave our listeners empty-handed – this week we’re giving out a Scosche reCOIL to one commenter in the U.S. It’s handy, simple car charger for the iPhone whose cable is retractable for easy stowing when not in use. BBDC was unexpectedly busy – hear how the devs feel about it all!

If you haven’t been following, the 2009 BlackBerry Developer Conference was the source of a lot of big announcements, like OpenGL support enabling some rich 3D graphics, an Adobe partnership that cements Flash on BlackBerry, and a long-overdue LinkedIn app. This episode of The Signal focuses a lot on themes, as we have the fine folks from BlackBerry Theme Park and themes4bb giving us our take on the new Theme Builder Studio. The winner of the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) (NSDQ: RIMM) Partner’s Fund challenge, James Shannon from DevelopIQ, gives us some feedback from the app developer side, and how all of the various announcements impact the 7digital music store. No conference is complete without hooking up with some fellow bloggers – Ronen Halevy from BerryReview and Kevin Michaluk from CrackBerry weigh in on the show overall, and what RIM’s future with developers is looking like.

The Signal 45: The DROIDs We’re Looking For and Tenqa Bluetooth Speaker Giveaway

Motorola (NYSE: MOT)’s back in the game with droid.

Motorola’s droid launch captures all of our attention this week, spanning from hands-on impressions of the hardware, Android 2.0 and what the freshly-included turn-by-turn navigation system means for traditional PNDs. So far, the Motorola’s will be the Android handset to beat, but Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE)’s X10 may very quickly grab that claim.

We take a few questions from twitter, which are always welcome at either our @IntoMobile account, or directly to our editors, @WillPark, @SimonSage, or @GJCAG. Thanks to @acurrie, @Phonedog_Noah, @samrsdad, and @moosc for the questions!

As usual, we’ve got some toys to giveaway: two Tenqa stereo Bluetooth speakers, so you can stream your tunes from your phone out to whatever room suits your fancy. Verizon’s new ad campaign: ‘Don’t Text and Drive’

“Don’t Text and Drive.” So reads the tagline of Verizon (NYSE: VZ)’s latest advertising campaign aimed at preventing thoughtless drivers from putting their text messaging needs ahead of public safety. The new ad campaign will blitz television, radio, print, online, billboards and non-traditional media with words of wisdom from the first US wireless carrier to back legislation that required drivers to use hands-free mobile phone solutions when driving.

Laws making it illegal to drive while tapping out a text message have already hit the books in many of the United States, but Verizon is taking it upon themselves to stop wayward drivers from menacing our roads. “Our objective is clear and simple: change the behavior of drivers who text while behind the wheel. No text message is worth risking a life,” said Dan Mead, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Verizon Wireless.

The advertising campaign coincides with the holiday season – a time when many people are spending more time thinking about and visiting with family and friends. Verizon hopes that the season’s good vibes will strike a chord with drivers and convince them that driving with a steering wheel in one hand and a text message in the other just isn’t good practice.

The image you see above is what drivers across the US will see (as long as they’re not busy sending a text message) plastered on billboards on the side of the road. The video shows Verizon’s television ad for the “Don’t Text and Drive” campaign. There’s also a radio ad that you can listen to here.

The Signal #42: Tickled Pink and MiFi Hotspot Giveaway

We’ve finally seen what’s coming out of Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s Project Pink – was it worth the hype?

We manage to muster up four of our editors for another show, and although things get a little silly, we cover all the week’s big topics, like the rumour of Nokia (NYSE: NOK) buying up Palm (NSDQ: PALM), Google (NSDQ: GOOG) and Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s GVoice spat escalating to the FCC, as well as what the FCC could (or should) be regulating when it comes to carriers.

Last week we kicked off our giveaway for the Novatel portable Wi-Fi hotspot, and will be contacting our British winner shortly. This episode, Stefan and I run through the recently-released Opera 5 Beta, which, although isn’t quite finished, is a hugely impressive third-party mobile browser. Even if it doesn’t happen, it’s a cool thought experiment.

Now here’s an interesting little factoid gleaned from a new research report from JiWire. It seems that, when it comes to connecting handheld mobile devices, cafe WiFi hostpots across the US serve darn near all of their wireless bits and bytes to the iPhone OS. The iPhone OS (which runs on the iPhone and iPod Touch) accounts for 97.6% of all handheld devices logged onto WiFi hotspots tracked by JiWire – 54.2% use the iPhone and 43.4% are using the iPod Touch.

Taking the iPod Touch out of the equation for a moment, it’s interesting to see just how far ahead of other devices the iPhone stands – more than half of all mobile devices using cafe WiFi are iPhones. The closest competing handset in terms of cafe WiFi hotspot market share is the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N95. In fact, the Sony PSP is the second most used handheld device at these WiFi hotspots.

One way to look at the data is that the iPhone makes web browsing so easy that users are more likely to hop on the information superhighway for a quick stint. It also helps that all iPhone users are given free access to WiFi hotspots at Starbucks and Barnes & Noble stores in the US.

Rockstar Games’ critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is heading for the iPhone / iPod Touch this fall. In GTA: CW, you play as Huang Lee, a spoiled son of a recently killed Triad boss who travels to Liberty City to deliver a sword that is considered a family heirloom to the new boss, his Uncle Wu Lee. His trip turns disastrous as Huang Lee is robbed of the sword and left for dead. It is now up to Huang Lee to find out who stole the sword and return it to it’s rightful owner. If you’re a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, especially the original games where the action took place from a top-down view, you’re going to want to make sure you’ve got this gem on your iPhone at all times!

In addition to that, Rockstar Games also announced it’s upcoming portable music creating application, which features beats from famous hip-hop producer Timbaland, will also be making an appearance on the iPhone.

“The simple, pick-up-and-play nature of Beaterator lends itself so well to the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) (NSDQ: AAPL) platforms,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “We are happy to deliver an application that allows for such unprecedented sharing and ease-of-use.”

Sprint Touch Pro2 tutorial video makes us drool

With Sprint (NYSE: S) having announced their own HTC Touch Pro2 this week, Windows Mobile fans have been foaming at the mouth in anticipation of the Sept. 8th launch date. Today, there’s more reason to drool over the Touch Pro2. Sprint has posted a new set of Sprint Touch Pro2 tutorial videos that highlights the business-centric smartphone’s features and capabilities.

There’s really nothing in the video below that we didn’t already know about the Pro2 – 3.6-inch WVGA touchscreen, slide-and-tilt QWERTY keyboard, GPS, WiFi and TouchFLO 3D UI – but the spiffy animations and soothing background guitar-music make for a geeky-fun video. Our favorite part is the mention of the 3.5mm headphone jack that no other Touch Pro2 to date has featured.

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) (NYSE: NOK) and InterDigital have been fighting it our for a few years now, regarding four patents relating to UMTS (aka 3G) technology. A Houston Judge yesterday ruled in Nokia’s favor saying he has determined no patent infringement took place. Of course InterDigital is upset with the decision, and are making a petition for another round of review. At the end of the day, patents make your toys a little bit more expensive.

Bert Nordberg to become the new President of Sony Ericsson on October 15th

Bert Nordberg (pictured above), who is currently the Executive Vice President of the Ericsson Group and Head of Ericsson’s Silicon Valley headquarters, will switching things up a bit by becoming the Co-President of Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) (NYSE: SNE) on September 1st. He’ll be learning the ropes with current Sony Ericsson President Hideki (Dick) Komiyama for a month and a half, after which Bert will become the sole President of Sony Ericsson on October 15th. It doesn’t stop there, current Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer will become Chairman of the Board of Sony Ericsson on the 15th of October, replacing Carl-Henric Svanberg, CEO of Ericsson. What does this all mean for Sony Ericsson? Hopefully, now with Howard Stringer poking around, they’ll bring devices to market that are both physically lust worthy and technically capable as well. It wasn’t that long ago that Sony licensed the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) (NSDQ: PALM) OS and made an awesome lineup of PDAs under the CLIÉ brand name which won the hearts of geeks all over the world. Can he and Bert bring back those days of innovation? I’m crossing my fingers.

The Signal #33: Summer Apps of the Week and Fighting for Nortel

We’ve got a new Apps of the Week segment! Waddayathink?

Will, Stefan and I are back for this week’s IntoMobile podcast – a lot of dramatic news this week, including suicides, slicing up bankrupt wireless giants, and widespread service outages. We take some time to talk about Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s use of Safari for their iPhone implementation of Latitute and what signal it sends to Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) about web apps.

We’re also introducing a new Apps of the Week segment, where we each tackle an app for a different platform, but all surrounding a common theme. We went with “summer” as a fairly general thing, but are open to suggestions for future episodes.

Terms & Conditions – UK Contests

I) Contest participant must be a resident of the UK in order to qualify for the prize.
II) By entering the contest, the contestant acknowledges that they are at least 18 years of age. If contestant is under 18, their entries will be disqualified from the contest.
III) If the prize is locked to a particular carrier service, contestant must be aware of the device’s limitation.
IV) IntoMobile does not offer cash alternatives to prizes. What we promote as the prize is exactly what the winner will receive.
V) When a winner is chosen, the winner has 7 days from the first email sent to claim their prize. If the winner fails to respond, IntoMobile has the right to disqualify the winner and proceed to pick a new one.
VI) The winning contestant must have a valid address to ship the prize to. P.O. Boxes will not be an acceptable address.
VII) The prize may be opened by IntoMobile in order to ensure the prize will be shipped complete. The product itself will remain untouched.
VIII) Winner will not hold IntoMobile or its partners liable if product is damaged or defective in any way.
IX) Contestants will not attempt to cheat or enter fraudulent entries into the contest. If IntoMobile finds a contestant attempting to cheat or fraud a contest, their entries will be disqualified and the contestant will be banned from future contests.

P.S.: After actually doing some homework, it turns out Nortel has some 30,000 employees versus GM Canada’s 12,000.

The Signal #32: App Store Explosion and Joggler Giveaway

LG, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Symbian all announce app stores in the same week?

It’s just Stefan and I this episode, as Will is off gallivanting at Mobile Beat 2009, but no worries, it was a pretty slow week news-wise. Although there wasn’t much happening on the device side of things, three announcements for app stores certainly caught our attention. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE)’s second quarter losses also got us talking about how much to blame on the recession. Of course, the bickering between Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and Palm (NSDQ: PALM) continue, and we talk about what the iTunes syncing blockage really means.

This week’s giveaway is for our UK readers – again, from the fine folks at O2. Ben’s been playing around with the Joggler, and now he’s got one to give away! If you haven’t caught his coverage of this device, it’s a pretty cool idea, and focuses as something of a family hub for calendar events (which sends SMS reminders as needed), and even acts as a digital picture frame with 1 GB of on-board memory and streaming from your PC over Wi-Fi. Interview with Appcelerator on Chrome OS and Mobile Web Applications

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) threw us a bit of a curveball with their Chrome OS announcement, and while not unwelcome, it certainly has mobile developers wondering where they stand with Android and any plans for netbook apps. Jeff Haynies heads up a company called Appcelerator which works on porting web apps between browser, Android and iPhone – we tap his experiences with web-based software for his opinions on Chrome OS and what it means for Android and developers. We saw a few supposed screenshots of Chrome OS in action this week, but there are still a lot questions unanswered. Be sure to check out Jeff’s blog for more his thoughts on the situation.

So, who’s holding out for Rachael? What’s a Hero?

This week is dominated by Android news, predominately by our first look at Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE)’s new Xperia model code-named Rachael, as well as smashed rumours regarding Nokia (NYSE: NOK) picking up Android. Will and I close up our discussions regarding the Touch Pro 2 and the N97, and Stefan sums up his talk with the UI tech manager at Symbian (definitely worth a listen, if you didn’t catch it earlier this week).
