Yesterday was Monday, but it sure felt like a Sunday to me! The 24 hour delay in results aside, it was fantastic that we received over 70 submissions at the Handy Taskman Contest page. A lot of the ideas were interesting and I wish I had 5 lisences to give, but sadly I have to narrow this down to 3:
First up is Rex: His idea is simple, when a person creates a meeting in their agenda let them define what profile should be active during said meeting therefore insuring your device doesn’t ring. Absolutely brilliant. I’m sure it can be added to Handy Calender.
Second we have Varun: Make a todo list with tagging. The S60 todo list in its current state doesn’t support categories and that in it of itself made switching from Palm to S60 a real pain in the ass for me personally. A simple application that would let me tag my todo’s and have a mini tag cloud so I can see which lists are getting too large to manage would be very handy.
Third: WhatleyDude suggests that there should be an application called “Handy Accesspoint.” You choose the one access point to rule them all and you never, ever, have to make that selection again or have applications ask you if you want to allow network access. My 9300 has this feature and I too wonder why S60 didn’t get it.
Congratulations to the winners, you should be expecting your licences by the end of the day today or the latest tomorrow morning.
A huge thanks to everyone who participated. Some ideas that I personally would like to see implemented: Igor Stosevski says the application switcher needs some WOW effects, it should be more like Windows Vista’s application switcher. I whole heartily agree that the current application switcher in S60 is boring and while Handy Taskman is a huge jump in terms of usability, it too can be better. With the announcement that the next version of S60 will have a UI Accelerator Toolkit (more information at All About Symbian) we can only start dreaming of the gorgeous new ways we will be interacting with our S60 devices.
Hackel suggests that the call duration should be in the call log. Again, this is something S40 has, but it never made the jump to S60.
Another S40 feature that didn’t make the jump to S60 is the calculator application as Kalle had mentioned. My buddies at S60 are going to hate me for saying this, but the S40 out of box experiance kicks S60 to the curb, then kicks it in the face several times, then urinates on it. It is more logically laid out, has more features and presents the user with much more relevant data.
Amjad wants a clipboard manager similar to what Microsoft Office has, that would be brilliant for people who do a lot of copy and pasting such as myself, but I question how many S60 users even know how to copy and paste!
Hopefully the guys at Epocware, and other S60 developers, will take a look at these 70+ application/feature requests and see how they can help make your dreams come true.
