Q&A with RIM VP on the first BlackBerry Developer Conference

Q: This is your first run at the conference – how do you think it’s going so far?

A: We blew away our numbers in terms of what we expected. Our rooms, I’ve been told, are standing room only. People are crammed into the sessions, there are even waiting lists. It was our first conference, so we took a bit of a conservative approach, but it’s just great to see, because we know the interest is there, and for the years coming up, we’re going to increase the size even more. So far, it’s been just amazing.

The other thing was, typical of conferences, people jam into a room and then halfway through start trickling out. From the feedback I’ve gotten from the sessions, every single person has stayed in those rooms until the very last word was spoken and very last PowerPoint slide came up on the screen. I think that’s another indication of the quality of the presentations that are going on, which I know the technical team spent a lot of work on. People are sitting through the entire the sessions and absorbing everything, and that’s great to see.

Q: For future years, what are you looking forward to?

A: I’m looking forward to getting through this week. [Laughs] I’m being perfectly honest! I’m just excited about getting through this one to see what happens, and once we get a feel for feedback… Did we go too technical? Were we too technical? Could we use more of this topic? Until I get some feedback, both personal and from developers, then I’ll start talking about future years. All I know is we’re going to get a bigger meeting space. [Laughs]

Q: Well, thanks a lot Jeff. I’m enjoying it so far, and look forward to the rest of the conference.

A: Good! Thank you!
