The iPhone Dev Team’s prolonged search for the elusive iPhone 3G software unlock solution is finally starting to come to a head. iPhone 3G users looking to unlock the iPhone 3G’s baseband firmware will be happy to hear that The Team has made yet another breakthrough on the road to unlocking the iPhone 3G.
Today, we’re hearing that the iPhone Dev Team can now run unsigned code in the background through the 3G baseband, and can now downgrade the 01.45 baseband to previous versions. Add that to their ability to interact with the baseband in different ways, and this new discovery makes a software-based unlock solution all that much more likely.

The iPhone Dev Team has stated from the get-go that a viable iPhone 3G software unlock solution was being developed but a working solution is not guaranteed. They are hacking away at older baseband firmwares (the code that runs the 3G cellular radio) with success, but they caution against upgrading to the imminent iPhone 2.2 OS update.
iPhone 3G users updating their iPhone OS outside of the PwnageTool-based jailbreak procedure (outlined here) risk flashing a newer baseband firmware that kills any future hopes for a software-based unlock solution. So, if you’re chomping at the bit to update your iPhone 3G to iPhone 2.2 OS, you might do well to ease up and wait for the Dev Team to officially release their iPhone 2.2 OS jailbreak – seeing as how the iPhone 2.2 OS beta has already been jailbroken, you shouldn’t have to wait too long.
Again, be warned. Do NOT update to iPhone 2.2 OS without the PwnageTool-based jailbreak procedure. You risk killing any future iPhone 3G unlocking options if you do!
