BSNL, the state-owned mobile network operator in India, is going to start taking 3G USB modems from Micromax – this follows the ongoing rollout of 3G services, currently covering 11 cities (but due to cover up to 700 in the coming months!).
Micromax has both HSDPA and HSUPA variants of it’s modems to offer apparently, and they also support Mac/Windows, along with upcoming support for some Linux O/Ss.
It’s good to see the ongoing rollout of 3G USB Modems – they really are a difference maker in terms of InterWeb access, and in those regions and countries where fixed-line infrastructure is not consistent, they can literally be the deciding factor in online access for many. As you’ll know if you follow my posts, I firmly believe that 3G modems are in the process of exorcising the ghost of public WiFi access points in a big way, due to their low-cost and ease of use – and now with their popularity surging in some developing economies, they are again proving their worth.
