University of Southern California, Nokia team-up to work on advanced mobile user experiences

The University of Southern CaliforniaThe University of Southern California (USC) and Nokia Research Center (NRC) Hollywood announced the so called “research collaboration framework agreement” that centers on advanced mobile user experiences. Under the terms of the deal, the two parties will work together on multiple projects in a variety of areas and will streamline the process for commercializing USC inventions.

The first project will focus on the advancement of Augmented Reality, technology that supplements user’s view of the real world with three-dimensional computer graphic objects “providing a real-time, interactive and intuitive means of accessing and displaying spatial information.”

According to Nokia, this area is a key technology in enabling advanced mobile user applications. Initially, USC and Nokia will focus on new vision-based AR tracking and content recognition techniques, adapted for use on mobile platforms. On that note, Nokia has recently unveiled its Nokia Point & Find service.

Finally, it’s worth noting that The University of Southern California is the first university to enter into a collaborative research agreement with Nokia’s Hollywood research arm. The USC Stevens Institute for Innovation facilitated the licensing transaction, and the financial terms were not disclosed…
