‘Civilization Revolution’ for iPhone: First Impressions

I have to admit, after reading Daniel’s post the other day about the new ‘Civilization Revolution’ game for iPhone… Daniel was my unofficial ‘hero of the day’. Back in the day I was a bit of a Civilization junkie, starting out with the very first edition of the game. Many hours of my youth were spent tinkering away at that game, building armies, capturing cities, and taking over the world. Call it good times or miss-spent youth, the bottom line is I felt (and still feel) the game is one of the best franchises in history.

Naturally, yesterday I quickly downloaded the ‘Lite’ version of Civilization… To do my mandatory ‘try before you buy’ run-through. Gladly, I wasn’t disappointed. Of course the ‘Lite’ version is somewhat limited. You can only choose from 3 leaders/civilizations to play as, the game board seemed quite small, and I couldn’t seem to find any option to save my game. Overall though, this version gave me a great taste of what to expect in the full version.

Controls were easy, but keep in mind I’ve played almost every Civ game ever released. Touch a unit and slide your finger to set a destination, or fortify the unit in a city or elsewhere for extra protection. The city view is also easy to manage, but make sure you poke around this screen to figure out where everything is. Thankfully, if you’re a newbie to the game a tutorial is available. It makes everything somewhat clear, and will hopefully put you on the path to true enjoyment of the game.

My conclusion? This is a must-have for any Civilization fan. Newbies? If you’re looking for a captivating and intense turn-based game to widdle away the hours… Civilization Revolution could be it.

Keep in mind, pricing on the full version of ‘Civilization Revolution’ for iPhone is at $4.99 (iTunes link) for now, but will rise to $9.99 shortly. In fact, I was under the impression the $4.99 offer would have ended already… So, if you want to get the best deal, download and try the ‘Lite’ version real quick (iTunes link), then head over and pick up the full version before it’s too late 🙂
