A couple of month’s ago, Angry Mob Games announced it’s flagship title, Guerrilla Bob, was being developed for the iPhone / iPod Touch. The title falls under the category of a top-down, twinstick shooter, meaning one stick moves the character while the other allows the character to shoot in 360 degrees.
Angry Mob Games was gracious enough to give me some hands-on time with an early preview build of Guerrilla Bob. Guerrilla Bob doesn’t have much of a story at this point, but most of the greatest top-down, twinstick shooters of didn’t either (i.e. Ikari Warriors, Robotron, Geometry Wars to name a few). All you need to know is Guerrilla Bob is out to kick some serious ass.
The game’s characters and environments are rendered in 3D and each enemy has their own particular attack style and strategy when attacking Bob. Enemies like Boris the Bullet will stand back and simply shoot at Bob, while Pyro Billies and Johnny Booms have a more direct approach.
The preview build of Guerrilla Bob only had 2 1/2 levels available. Angry Mob Games offered a daytime & nighttime level in order to show that not all of the levels in Guerrilla Bob will be the same. Both levels had a good amount of run’n’gun action in them, but there were also portions of the level that broke up all of the senseless violence so it wouldn’t become repetitive.
The build also included boss and mini-boss battles. The boss battle at the end of the first level had Guerrilla Bob fighting Mucho Dolor as he rides on his excavator. After defeating Mucho Dolor on his excavator, he then jumps off and starts firing rockets at Bob. Needless to say, the boss battle had a good amount of challenge to it. The mini-boss battle in the second level on the other hand, wasn’t as challenging. Guerrilla Bob is pitted again Sam Butchefeller as he jumps from raft to raft and he was easily dispatched of during multiple playthroughs.
Guerrilla Bob is still in early developments and Angry Mob Games tells me they plan on adding a survival mode where Guerrilla Bob takes on wave after wave of enemies, an online mode that will allow for players to unlock achievements, and of course, the main story for Guerrilla Bob. As of now, Guerrilla Bob seems like it has the potential to be a solid twinstick shooter for the iPhone platform.
