You already knew that your BlackBerry can do email, instant messaging, phone calls, and about a hundred other things pretty darn well, right? Did you know it could also save you from a serious gunshot wound? Perhaps even save your life?
On Saturday, February 6th, Anthony J. Holtvogt (24) and his girlfriend were getting ready to leave a restaurant in Butler Township, Ohio. Holtvogt holds a concealed carry permit for a handgun, and often carries it with him. While attempting to put on his jacket, Holtvogt noticed the sleeve was caught in the coat. As he reached down to fix the situation, he noticed the slide on his .32-caliber handgun was pulled. Shortly thereafter the gun went off, shooting a bullet straight through his jacket, and into his girlfriends’ left pants pocket. Ouch, right? Not so much. The bullet happened to strike the girlfriends’ BlackBerry dead center. The only damage done to her was bruising, while I’m sure the BlackBerry is down for the count. Incredible.
I highly doubt the life-saving BlackBerry was a ‘Magnum‘, but it it was, man would that ever be fitting. Holtvogt is now facing charges on the incident, which is apparently punishable of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. If nothing else, Holtvogt will certainly have his concealed carry permit taken away.
In other news, RIM has announced a new line of bullet proof vests. More details to follow.
