Orange is full of news at the Mobile World Congress, but now I want to focus on a single news item that deals with roaming, as it’s the issue that affects all of us when travelling (our trip to Mobile World Congress, included). The carrier used the big event to launch a daily data roaming tariff across the EU. Simply said, 2 EUR buys you 2 MB of data, and 5 EUR – 10 MB (only for iPhone users in France, at the moment).
The first plan (2 EUR for 2 MB) was originally launched in Spain and Romania last year, and is now being rolled out to the UK, Poland, France, Slovakia, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg, Belgium and Moldova. Across the Orange footprint, these bundles will be offered to existing customers on an opt-in basis.
As for the other, more expensive option (yet a better deal), it has been made specifically for iPhone customers and is launching in France first with some other countries to follow.
2 MB may not seem much, but Orange says we should take a different perspective – that’s around a thousand tweets or 80-100 emails (without attachments) or 15 to 20 images. I’m not sure how you use your data connection, but that’s way not enough in my book. Then again, when travelling, I use data services only while in a hotspot, so it kinda makes sense.
