Titanium alloy + CAD design = Titanium iPhone 3GS with killer MacBook Pro looks

You might not think Apple’s iPhone 3GS casing needs any kind of cosmetic updates, but there are people out there that just aren’t satisfied with the glossy plastic back adorning the iconic Apple smartphone. Unlike most of these people, one individual actually had the resources to do something about it – and he managed to create what is possibly the single most impressive-looking iPhone 3GS we’ve ever laid eyes on. The iPhone 3GS you see here has been retrofitted, by a guy named Martin, with a custom casing fashioned out of a titanium alloy that gives the aging smartphone a new look befitting its Cupertino-based design pedigree.

We’ve said before how dated the iPhone 3GS looks in comparison to hot new smartphones like the HTC Legend and the Motorola DROID. Those gorgeous touchscreens dominating each device’s front face and sleek designs that don’t have us waxing nostalgic for 2008 really highlight how long in the tooth the iPhone 3GS has become. The next-generation iPhone (iPhone 4G) really needs to step it up, or risk losing market share to Android.

Thankfully, there are folks out there willing to show Apple how things should be done. The titanium alloy in this iPhone 3GS is said to be “RF transparent,” which means it’ll allow all cellular signals to pass through without any of the interference that an aluminum casing would cause. We love the sharp angles and MacBook Pro-esque design aesthetic as well. Apple’s entire computing lineup has adopted the aluminum unibody look, why not the iPhone?

Unless you some decent CAD skills and access to titanium alloy and a milling machine, you’re probably never going to get your iPhone 3GS to look like this. You’ll just have to make like the rest of us and hope that Apple’s next iPhone looks something like what you see here.

Engadget also has video of the phone in real life. Head on over to check it out!
