Droid Eris gets Sense 2.1 through leaked ROM

Are you a Droid Eris owner waiting impatiently for the updated Sense UI running on top of Android 2.1?  Well good news guys, a recent leaked ROM found its away on the XDA forums! But with the update officially coming some point soon, is it worth it?

Right after the ROM was released onto the XDA forums, users were reporting that the update did not work. The zip file did indeed contain the update, but it seemed to be corrupted. Soon after, the devs got after it, patched the file, and it looks like the update works just fine now.

Since this is the update for a first-generation device, some things have been left out of the 2.1 update, most notably, live wallpapers. The Eris is only running on a 528MHz processor, so if live wallpapers were implemented into this update, it would bog the device down, no doubt. Live wallpapers serve no functionality but to look cool, and drain battery, so it shouldn’t be that big  of a deal to have them missing. It also looks like protected (not all paid, necessarily) applications are not available in the market, and this is likely something that will only be fixed until Verizon comes out with their official update. However, this is the XDA forums we’re talking about.

Verizon has already confirmed that the Eris will be receiving the Android 2.1 update at some point in the first quarter of the year.  With it being March and all, there is very little time to wait for the official update, let’s just it hope doesn’t erase your entire device this time.  If you just can’t wait to get the ‘leap’ feature (pictured), then go right ahead, but if you’re not all that Android-tech-savvy, I’d say wait it out.

[UPDATE:] Here is a video of said ROM running on the Eris.
