Olive’s new FrvrOn ditches vowels, picks up AAA batteries in India

The thought of low-cost mobile phones sweeping through the US makes us cringe. For India, though, cheap cellphones are big business – big enough that mobile phone maker Olive has just released their vowel-shunning FrvrOn phone as the country’s first handset to supplement its battery pack with a removable AAA battery. The FrvrOn, which we figure to mean “forever on,” follows the lead set by Philips with their AAA-compatible Xenium phones, putting the focus on battery life over high-end features.

Speaking of features, the Olive FrvrOn scrapes the bottom of the barrel. You get a minuscule 1.5-inch CSTN display packing a dismal 128×128 pixels, an FM radio, polyphonic ringtones, games, and speakerphone for your hard-earned Rupees. In the US, you’d be paying $37 for the FrvrOn, which makes sense, given the aforementioned “un-feature-set.”

Still, if you need a last-resort phone that will stay powered until you run out of AAA batteries – all for the price of a moderately fancy meal – the Olive FrvrOn might be a good choice. Of course, you’ll have to deal with getting this thing into the US. Find the Olive website here.
