I’ll attempt to explain that slightly confusing title, first of all. A few days back, we were told that the HTC Desire would be coming via T-Mobile, with devices available in store on Monday 29th March. In the event, that turned out not to be case, though it would appear some people still managed to get hold of Desires via the likes of independent retailers such as the Carphone Warehouse, or via e-tailers.
Speaking to someone in an independent mobile phone store today, he was of the opinion that the HTC Desires coming via T-Mobile were delayed because of the fact an issue had been found with the software that locks the device to the T-Mobile network. You thought all that stuff was old-school? Nope, the network-locking practice is still in place in the UK today, though not all networks do it.
Moving on then to my Twitter feed today (see above), I noticed that T-Mobile UK tweeted that devices should be in shops in the next couple of days – the only problem with that being of course that we observe Easter as a nation holiday, and so Friday and Monday are not business days – kind of important when you consider the logistics needed to ship the devices in-store.
What is net result of all this? Well, it’s certainly quite possible that you won’t be getting an HTC Desire from a T-Mobile store until next Tuesday 6th April at the earliest – a statement which tallies with what a chap in the local T-Mobile store told me. One week delay isn’t the biggest issue in the world, but it’s still not great when you consider that the HTC Desire is one of the most hotly-anticipated devices of the year so far!
I should also note that you can pick up the network-agnostic HTC Desire via a number of e-tailers in the UK.
