What comes to mind when you think “lap desk?” If you’re like us, you’re probably picturing a large-ish laptop that tends to get really hot and often burns thigh skin to a crisp when using it on your lap. Lap desks tend to provide better cooling, more convenient viewing angles, and keep the hot laptop off your, well, lap. But, does it have to be just for laptops? In an effort to break down that status quo, the folks at Quirky want you to start thinking of a lap desk as an iPad accessory. Their new Quirky Cradle iPad lap desk is, at once, both incredibly useful and geek-tastically quirky.
Here’s the thing about the iPad. No matter how many times Apple pushes iPad commercials down your throat, showing you how seemingly convenient it is to plop their tablet on your lap and hop on the information superhighway, there’s no doubt that the Apple tablet is a bit awkward to use. Unless you like sitting on your couch with your knees bent, using an iPad on the couch requires a good amount of finesse. That’s where the Quirky Cradle comes in.
This particular lap desk is made from bamboo plywood – a material that’s aptly called Plyboo. There’s a foam cushion underneath to make it nice and comfy for your jiggly sedentary sensitive thighs. And, because the iPad makes as much use of the landscape orientation as it does the portrait orientation, the Cradle features an integrated swiveling plastic plate that makes it easy to rotate your tablet. Simply place it on the plate and you’re free to rotate it with a simple flick of your wrist. If that’s not geeky enough for you, you’re probably at a level of geekiness that we have yet to attain (although, we’ve almost got enough experience points).
The Quirky Cradle is priced at $52.50 for pre-orders – which is the only way to buy a Cradle at the moment. If you’re interested, find the Cradle pre-order here. You’d be wise to act fast, as pre-orders are limited to 875 units.
