Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G retail packaging spotted in the wild

As the US, nay the world, waits for Sprint to launch their much-anticipated HTC EVO 4G Android smartphone next month, mobile tech geeks will have to pass the time with somewhat previews of the Android phone in any shape and form. The latest preview of the EVO 4G isn’t as much a look at the smartphone itself – we’ve had plenty of chances to play with and photograph the handset anyway – as it is a look at Sprint’s retail packaging for the EVO. With this “leak,” we get our first look at the retail box that many will no doubt be picking up on June 4th.

Take a look at the recycled cardboard packaging materials and the oddly-shaped box. We have to give Sprint its due credit for using what looks like post-consumer recycled paper in the retail packaging – the whole “eco-friendly” movement is a big deal when you’re pushing out millions of cardboard boxes for any given handset. But, we’re not sure what the design folks were thinking with the tapered box and the flat, extended flat-top. The EVO 4G box like like some sort of microwave dinner, doesn’t it?

On the one hand, the box looks unique and does add to the EVO’s status as this year’s stand-out Android handset. Hell, the EVO 4G is probably this year’s stand-out smartphone. But, we have an overwhelming urge to poke holes into the top of the box, throw it in the microwave for a few minutes, and let the box cool for a minute before eating its delicious contents.

The box also confirms that the handset will ship with an 8GB microSD card. That’s good news for anyone looking to load up their EVO with music and videos.
