AT&T to unveil its first HTC Android phone on June 7th?

For some time now, AT&T has only carried on Android device, the Backflip, and it kind of sucks.. a lot.  We’re now hearing that HTC will be bringing an updated Tilt device with Android in tow. Sad thing about this new device? Will it be a dud, too?

The picture above isn’t the real deal, obviously, but it can give you an idea of what to expect. If it holds on to the crazy amount of buttons the first one has, I couldn’t imagine anyone choosing this over any other AT&T phone available, and let’s face it, they only have one good phone. That may be a bit harsh– HTC has come a long way, and their attention to design has gotten better. Almost every device they are coming out with is solid enough to take on the big boys, and hopefully they will deliver the goods with AT&T’s second Android device.

Unfortunately, AT&T will probably still continue to block downloads outside of the Android Market. But the new phone is said to be running on HTC’s latest version of the Sense UI, which can only be a good thing. I’m really hoping there’s some more screen real estate on the updated device, as the Sense UI should be experiences on biggest screens. Sorry, Tattoo. What could be interesting is if that the ‘mystery’ HTC device we saw floating around the FCC a while back indeed turns out to be AT&T’s upcoming Android handset. We don’t have much to go on, but it already rocks the correct bands to go to the 2nd largest US carrier.

Hopefully AT&T will get a decent Android device from HTC, and not lock it down like they did with Backflip. On one hand, that’s what you get for being an open-sourced platform, allowing anyone to manipulate the system. On the other hand, why hinder capabilities of a handset when they have more options? Either way, lacking specific Android features or not, AT&T is getting another handset based on Google’s OS. What could be bad about that?
