New Rogers Protection Program Doesn’t Cover Blending Accidents

For those without an OtterBox, Rogers has just opened up their handset protection program for their customers, offering 0$ replacement options, loaner devices, and subsidized repairs on damaged or lost phones. This protection extends beyond the manufacturer’s warranty, but there are a couple of caveats. Loaner devices require a $50 deposit, for one. Secondly, the repair subsidy is only available for your first claim, and subject to the participating store’s approval. Third, you’re only eligible for the early upgrade if you have at least 12 months left on your contract. Of course, iPhone has its own set of rules for repairs. The repairs themselves have a 90-day warranty, so if Rogers busts anything up further, you can always bring it back. If your phone is still within the manufacturer’s warranty, you should be able to get your new device within 5 business days.

The program sounds mostly good, but I’m curious what kind of costs customers are looking at for repairs, even with the subsidy. Also, the 0$ options they give you may be a considerable downgrade, and likely depends on how far along your contract you are. The especially bold-willed could skip Rogers repairs altogether by picking up parts directly from sites like cnn.cn and TrueSupplier and crack open their devices themselves. Still, Rogers’ heart is in the right place, and they get big bonus points for cooking up such a funny video for the service. Check out rogers.com/protection for a closer look.
