Aside from coming to three operators in the U.S. — Sprint Nextel, SouthernLINC Wireless and Boost Mobile — Motorola will also sell its iDEN-based, Android-powered i1 in Latin America. Their, Moto’s partner is NII Holdings which offers iDEN services under the Nextel brand.
As you probably already know, the i1 is the first Android-powered iDEN device and also the first rugged Android phone (at least I’m not aware of any similar product). Its specs include a 3.1-inch HVGA touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera with flash, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, microSD memory card slot and a standard suite of Google apps and services pre-installed, plus Facebook client, Swype text input app and Opera Mini 5.
As for the exact release date, NII Holdings hasn’t unveiled it but we’re hoping the company will start selling the phone in the next couple of weeks or so.
And while you wait, again I call you to check out Will’s interview with Dirty Jobs’ Mike Rowe as he talks about the Motorola i1 and why it’s so great.
