Symbian Foundation is one member stronger, as we have Renesas Electronics Corporation announcing its decision to join the Nokia-led group. As part of the deal, Renesas will make sure its chipsets support the Symbian platform to enable OEMs worldwide to create Symbian-compliant devices that fully meet the needs of network operators.
Renesas has a track record of providing mobile chipset platforms for NTT DOCOMO’s FOMA MOAP Symbian-based smartphones. The idea now is to proactively participate within the open source ecosystem and drive innovation centered on the combination of Renesas’ next-generation multi-core CPU technology and multimedia and graphics capabilities provided by the Symbian platform. Renesas also intends to contribute to the development of the Symbian Hardware Abstraction Interface (SHAI), which will make hardware adaptation easier than ever before.
Finally, we have words of Larry Berkin, Head of Global Alliances at Symbian, to share. He said: “Symbian is thrilled to welcome Renesas Electronics Corporation as a member of the Symbian community. We value greatly Renesas’ vast industry and technology expertise as a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions and are certain that their active contribution, not only to the platform but also to the community, will further enrich the Symbian user experience of the future with fantastic multimedia and graphics capabilities.”
