comScore: Samsung and Verizon lead the U.S. market

comScore is out with the latest report on key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry during the three month period ending April 2010. The figures are compared to the preceding three-month period, ranking the leading mobile OEMs and mobile operators in the U.S. according to their share of usage by current mobile subscribers age 13 and older.

Mobile OEMs

During the period, 234 million Americans age 13 and older were mobile subscribers. Samsung is leading the way with 22.1% of the market, which is up one point from the prior three month period. LG ranked second with 21.8% share, followed by Motorola (21.6%, down 1.3%), RIM (8.4%) and Nokia (8.1% share).

Mobile operators

Verizon is the top carrier, holding 31.1% of the market. AT&T ranked second with 25.2%, up 0.2 percentage points from the period ending January 2010. Sprint is third with 12.0% and that’s also T-Mobile’s share. Tracfone gained 0.3 points to capture 5.1% of the market.

Mobile content usage

In an average month, 64.6% of U.S. mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, up 1.1% versus the prior three month period. Browsers were used by 31.1% of U.S. mobile subscribers (up 2.5%), while subscribers who used downloaded applications comprised 29.8% of the mobile audience (increase of 3.1%). As for the social networks and blogs, they were accessed by 19.9% of mobile subscribers, which is 2.8% up from the previous period…
