MeeGo got a new and big supporter – Spain’s Telefonica. The company pledged to support the Linux-based platform which was unveiled at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona by Intel and Nokia.

In a statement, the operator group said it will use MeeGo to deliver products such as “smartphones, netbooks, tablets, and internet connected TVs” across 25 countries where it operates, reaching around 265 million customers. The plan is to work alongside device manufacturers, application developers and service providers to include MeeGo-based products and services into the offering.

As you may know, MeeGo was created by combining Intel’s Moblin and Nokia’s Maemo platforms. The first MeeGo code was made primarily for use in netbooks but the future releases will definitely support other devices such as smartphones and tablets. The platform was seen as a potential competitor to Google’s Android OS, and we’re eager to see the first MeeGo devices hitting the market. It add to the competition, providing more options to the consumers which is always a good thing…
