The Nokia Connections event just kicked off in Singapore, and the Finnish company got things started by unveiling the Xseries X5 slider – a square, QWERTY keyboard slider handset. The styling for the X5 is a bit of an odd choice, and seems a little bit stuck in the past, but then again there are so many other square-ish devices that slide or flip open to reveal full QWERTY keyboards, like the Microsoft Kin One, LG Remarq or the LG Lotus. It looks compact for those wanting a small form factor, but without sacrificing a valuable method of input when they want to get SMS crazy. In addition to the X5, Nokia has also given us an 8GB version of the X6, too.
Nokia seems to be pushing the X5’s multimedia capabilities along with its compatibility with Ovi Music and Nokia’s Comes With Music in regions where it’s available. The X5 features a loud speaker dedicated music keys, and Nokia tells us that sound quality is excellent, so we’ll wait and see once we put it through our tests.
Of course, it would be remiss of Nokia not to include social networking features here in this day and age, so there is IM, e-mail, Facebook, Twitter and MySpace integration. And for throwing up pictures on your social networking sites, the X5 has a 5MP camera with flash, a measly 200MB of on-board memory, but the inclusion of a 2GB microSD card with support for up to 32GB. Other little perks include the ability to control music by shaking the X5 around.
The X5 is set to be released in Q3 2010 for 165 Euros before taxes, but for now, only in Indonesia. Say what? Alright then, it’s pretty clear where this device is soon to be headed — into oblivion. But if you’re interested, take a peek at the video below to see the Nokia X5 in action.
