Not to be outdone by the Droid X, Motorola’s Droid 2 is also starting to make some public appearances. A NASA intern perusing a tech show on the premises had some time to play with the Droid 2 at the Verizon stand, and had a few observations to make. The Droid 2 was generally smoother than the original, with more curves, but the same size and hardware layout. The 5 megapixel camera shot a bit more quickly, and the touch-sensitive navigation keys south of the display were in a slightly different order than the original. The keyboard was wider and more comfortable, especially with no more lip on the right side when open. There’s also a new voice command button in the bottom-left, and the directional pad has arrows to feel a bit more traditional. The Verizon rep also confirmed a 1GHz processor, 8 GB of internal memory, and that the it will likely launch in the next few weeks on Verizon with Android 2.2 and no MotoBlur as previously speculated. If it launches with Android 2.1, the rep said 2.2 wouldn’t be far behind.
The Droid 2 is shaping up to be a moderate refresh, and will probably be quickly forgotten once Motorola’s monster with a 2 GHz processor reveals itself. Still, those who were on the fence with the first one will probably dig the less sharp and blocky look. Any takers?
