Clarion, Nokia team-up on connected car technology

We know Nokia is eager to get in your car. Heck, we’ve even seen the Finnish company partnering with Continental and now they are working together with another car accessory player – Clarion. The two parties will collaborate on Terminal Mode, which is a technology that will improve the way how mobile devices and car infotainment systems work together. The result of this partnership will further boost the development of next-generation smart car infotainment systems.

Clarion on its end will develop the smartphone interface that Nokia and Consumer Electronics for Automotive (CE4A) are proposing as industry standard. Moreover, they will build an application service business for in-car devices utilizing Nokia’s Ovi Store. Yap, that means apps in cars!

Nokia puts its global footprint into the partnership, making sure Clarion is the number one choice for consumers in markets where Finns are dominating. That includes both Europe and developing countries like China…

And that’s about all we have at the moment. I’m hoping to see some real-world implementation of the Terminal Mode at the next Mobile World Congress. Then I’ll be able to tell you more – whether it helps or distracts you while driving. Let’s face it – voice commands and head-up displays are the future of the in-car infotainment systems and I’m guessing both Nokia and Clarion are shooting in that direction.
