Mobile internet firm Volantis commissioned a report on the mobile web usage and we have some interesting details to share. The main point is that games and social networks will persuade consumers to use mobile internet services more regularly. Here are the key findings:

  • 42% of of US consumers aged 18-34 said that mobile entertainment and gaming (42%) or social networking (55%) motivates them to use the mobile web more regularly.
  • In the UK, 55% of respondents said that social networking would encourage them to use the mobile web more, while 17% were keen to access games on their mobiles. (though I’m not sure what “access games” means?)
  • iPhone is not a must have device for enjoying the mobile Internet, or at least 90% of Americans think that way. 38% of respondents in the US and the UK felt that an iPhone was inconsequential as part of having a good mobile web experience.

Volantis’ CEO, Mark Watson, added that the arrival of HTML5 and its adoption by major mobile platforms will affect the industry dramatically. Couldn’t agree more.

Finally if you wonder, the survey was conducted among 4,324 consumers, aged 18+, in the UK and USA.
