In a country where seemingly everyone has a Nokia cellphone glued to the side of their head, it is amazing that the report of murderous cell phone numbers could cause mass hysteria. Unbelievable yes, but reportedly true. According to the Times of India, the city of of Nagpur is in a state of semi-panic due to a rumor that claims you could suffer physical injury, even perish, if you answer incoming calls from select “danger” numbers.
Police in the city of Nagpur have been swamped with calls about this phenomenon and even the media has fielded calls about these so-called “dangerous” numbers. The rumor flew wildly out of control late this past week when it took a deadly turn and police received reports of a nine-year old girl and a teenager dying at the hands of a cell phone in two separate incidents. In classic horror movie style, the teenager reportedly began bleeding from the ears after receiving the murderous phone call.
The Nagpur police are reportedly investigating these unusual reports and are asking residents not to panic. Likewise, mobile phone experts confirm that this rumor is false and claim, rather reasonably, that is either a prank or a cruel marketing gimmick. They are re-assuring people that dangerous and/or deadly numbers do not exist. LOL or WITW?
