BlackBerry App World 2.0 just got out of beta last week, and along with it came paid apps for Australia. Payment options include the original PayPal option, but you can also go with the new credit card billing. It doesn’t sound like any carrier partners have signed on just yet for wireless billing.
Australia actually only got App World in December, and even then, it was only free apps that were available. Sure, I get that there’s localization work to be done, but with a common language, one would think it wouldn’t take that long. The transition from free-only to paid apps is a change all on-device software markets have to make at some point or another in any given country, and RIM must do a lot of careful market assessments to figure out which countries would benefit the most from a paid App World. Maybe Australia’s just not a big market for RIM, or they’ve got their hands full with other countries. On the grand scale, I’d be curious to see how BlackBerry’s international premium app market coverage compares to the Android Market and iPhone App Store.
Aussies, if you want to get downloading, hit up RIM’s landing page, or take a look at our tour of App World 2.0.
