We’ve got the rumor of the week for you Android fans. It looks like the Gingerbread SDK may drop sometime next week, and will allow us to see exactly what Google has been working on all these months!
While this is a rumor, we can’t help but get our hopes up. The month of October was the launch windows that’s been floating around for a while now, so hopefully the SDK will officially make its debut next week. The SDK will allow developers and those interested to see the new APIs that Gingerbread will bring to the table, complete with an emulator that will allow us to see the new OS version in action. Gingerbread is supposed to bring a more aggressive UI overhaul to Android, and we can’t wait to see what’s changed.
We’re hopeful, but we won’t be so surprised if this rumor doesn’t come to fruition. Froyo is a great update, but we’re anxious to see what Google has done to revamp the user interface of Android. We expect the UI to take cues from the Android 2.1 3D Photo Gallery, which was made by CoolIris. If that is true, it will be interested to see how the 3D elements have been implemented throughout the OS. Maybe then we’ll have some sort of idea of what the requirements may be to run Gingerbread on your handset, as the only other information on the subject has been debunked.
If the SDK drops next week, we can have one thing solved for certain, the OS version number. Many have called Gingerbread Android 3.0, but certain reports have said otherwise. Gingerbread may actually be something like Android 2.3 or 2.5, saving the 3.0 crown for Honeycomb, which is said to be more tablet friendly. Whatever version Gingerbread actually turns out to be, we don’t care, we just want it on our phones.
Those of you hoping for a CyanogenMod 7 will have to wait even longer, as CM is built with AOSP (Android Open Source Project), which typically comes out after the SDK.
Let’s hope there will be some leaks leading up to the Gingerbread SDK release, if it does actually drop sometime next week.
