Qualcomm has acquired iSkoot and it plans to use the company to optimize mobile devices for power consumption and network bandwidth usage.
If you don’t know, iSkoot has a Kalaida platform which enables mobile operators to easily offer a variety of online services like Skype. Sure, you can download the Skype app directly to your Apple iPhone or Android phone, but iSkoot said its platform works in a more bandwidth-efficient way.
The iSkoot Kalaida platform is able to do this because it uses proxy servers to make many online services a cloud service for mobile phones. The company will now become part of the Qualcomm QuIC division.
“iSkoot and their products match our strategy to optimize the delivery of any service over a wireless network and deliver true business value to our partners and customers,” said Rob Chandhok, president of QuIC, in a prepared statement. “QuIC’s acquisition of iSkoot provides us with a push data services platform, a social network aggregation solution and voice 2.0 services that dramatically strengthens our ability to continue providing the most effective mobile solutions for operators and device makers as they serve consumers worldwide.”
It’s an interesting buy and we’ll have to see how Qualcomm can integrate this in devices moving forward.
