iOS 4.1 limera1n jailbreak for iPhone 4 now available for Mac, unlock on the way

For all you iPhone 4 users out there waiting for a jailbreak solution for iOS 4.1 before updating your Apple smartphone, you’ll be glad to hear that the limera1n jailbreak is now available for Mac. Previously released amidst some drama in the iPhone hacking community, Geohot’s limera1n tool beat the Chronic Dev Team’s greenpo1son jailbreak tool to market, but was only available for PCs. Now that greenpo1son is available for PCs, limera1n has been released for Mac users.

If you use a Mac, you’re only option for jailbreaking your iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1 is the limera1n tool. If you’re a PC user, both the Chronic Dev Team’s greenpo1son and GeoHot’s limera1n solutions will work just fine for you.

What’s more exciting right now is that a new baseband exploit has been found for the new 02.10 baseband firmware version found in the iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1, as well as baseband version 05.14 found in the iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.1. The baseband firmware, also known as the modem firmware, is the code that controls how your iPhone connects to cell towers, and is critically important for any potential unlock solution. The new exploit paves the way for a working unlock tool for the newest iPhone hardware running the newest iOS software.

The iPhone Dev Team has confirmed that they’ll delay ultrasn0w until Apple releases iOS 4.2, to avoid tipping their hand to Apple (and allowing Apple to patch the exploit with a subsequent iOS update), and iPhone developer Sherif Hashim recently confirmed that there’s a new exploit for the baseband. That could lead to an unlock solution hitting market sooner rather than later. Fingers crossed!

As it stands, if you rely on the ultrasn0w unlock to use your iPhone, or you want to preserve your SIM unlock, you should steer clear of updating your handset until the iPhone Dev Team releases an updated version of their unlock tool. You should know that ,if you’re running modem firmware 05.13 (iPhone 3GS iOS 4.0/4.01) or firmware version 02.10 (iPhone 4 iOS 4.0/4.01), you can still use ultrasn0w to unlock your already jailbroken device.
