Apple confirmed earlier today that it would be launching an App Store for its Mac OS X platform. One of the first developers to jump on board this new App Store is Firemint, creator of the popular Flight Control application for iOS. A teaser page setup by Firemint shows a screenshot from the HD version of the application running on a mockup of a MacBook Air.
For those that have not had the pleasurable experience of controlling your own busy airport, Flight Control is a popular iOS application that lets you take the seat of an air traffic controller in a busy airport. The premise is simple: navigate the incoming planes and helicopters to the proper runways without causing a collision.
Launched in March 2009, the game reached 2 million paid downloads in less than a year and propelled Firemint to the top of the game category in Apple’s mobile applications store. The application has been ported to the iPad as Flight Control HD and to other gaming platforms like the Nintendo DSi. Recently, Firemint teamed up with Namco and will bring Flight Control to the Android Market.
While Firemint may be one of the first iOS developers to make the jump to the new OS X App Store, it will not be the last. iOS developers already familiar with Apple development and the app store process are likely to capitalize on this new opportunity. Anyone have a favorite iOS app they would like to see ported to the OS X app store?
