We had heard that Rogers would be offering the BlackBerry Bold 9780 at the launch announcement earlier this week, and they’re already preparing with retail materials. Dummies and posters have been coming into Rogers stores all over the place, leading us to think the refreshed Bold will be on sale as soon as next week with a rumoured price point of $149.99 on a three-year contract.
The BlackBerry 9780 is an incremental upgrade on the 9700, bumping up the camera from 3.2 megapixels to 5 megapixels, and increasing the RAM from 256 MB to 512 MB. It also comes with OS 6, which makes the BlackBerry experience a little more swooshy, and tacks on universal search and an upgraded WebKit browser. Of course, 9700 owners shouldn’t feel too left out since they’re getting a software upgrade sooner or later. Otherwise, the 9780 is pretty much just like the 9700: 2.4″ HVGA display, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G, 624 MHz processor, and even has the same chassis.
It’s a decent enough update, and not really trying to blow anyone’s socks off, but it will keep the traditional BlackBerry form factor fresh enough to stay on store shelves. If you’re looking for something snazzier, Rogers also has the Torch 9800, or if you want something cheaper, there’s the Curve 3G 9300, or better still, the Pearl 9100.
