The popular Shazam app is now available for the GetJar independent app store, so Windows, BlackBerry and Symbian users can now get the music-tagging app for free.
If you’ve never used the Shazam app, you should feel free to head on over to GetJar.com and try it out. If there’s a song playing, you simply open the Shazam app, hit the tag button and it will identify the song and give you links to where you can buy it or allow you to share the song via various social networks. It’s pretty darn accurate in my experiences.
The Shazam app is a neat one to have on your phone and it’s one of my go-to demonstrations when I’m trying to show off a new phone. It’s also on our list of must-have Windows Phone 7 apps for a good reason.
As for GetJar, this is a major get for the independent app store and another sign that it is gaining some steam. GetJar already has more than 1 billion downloads and looks like it could be the second-most popular app store behind the Apple App Store.
GetJar has also been testing out a few new initiatives to get high-quality apps in the hands of users for free and it has seen mixed results. It was the first Android app store to land the mighty Angry Birds but the demand was so great that GetJar couldn’t keep up and its servers were down for a few hours.
The independent app store will continue to offer premium apps and games for free and it will even offer some game makers financial incentives to make this happen. It’s too early to tell if the resulting traffic and advertising revenues off that will make up for the initial cost of investment though.
That’s all for GetJar to worry about – all you need to know is that the independent store is stocking up with good apps.
