iPhone, Surround, G2 burned on a grill

Oh man, talk about something that’s painful to watch. The folks over at EZ Grill have put together a viral video to show off its BBQ and it decided to do a torture test of the Apple iPhone 4, the HTC Surround and the T-Mobile G2.

This is painful for me because these are all excellent devices. The Apple iPhone 4 is the latest device from Apple and it features a gorgeous 3.5-inch Retina Display and a redesign which led to some antenna and case issues but it does look a lot sleeker. Apple can’t seem to make enough of these things, as the company shipped more than 14 million units last quarter.

The T-Mobile G2 is the followup to the world’s first Android phone and it definitely brings the heat (see what I did?). The stock Android 2.2 handset has a nice QWERTY keyboard that pops out in a scissor-like manner and it’s filled with all the high-end features you’d expect from this type of device including WiFi, a beefy camera and the ability to access T-Mobile’s 4G network.

The HTC Surround actually won this grilling endurance test and that should be a small feather in the cap of this new Windows Phone 7 smartphone. You may know that the Surround has a slide-out Yamaha speaker, 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 5-megapixel camera and all the trimmings you’d expect from a top-shelf smartphone.

Of course, this grill test may be the best part of the HTC Surround as our review wasn’t in love with the device.

The HTC Surround is a unique device that sports a good operating system that will only get better over time. Unfortunately, I think it will reside as a novel footnote in the history of smartphones and don’t see many people having a real need for this device.
