TweetDeck for Android gets a new test release

If you ask us, TweetDeck for Android is still a ways behind the iPhone application, but the Android version of the popular Twitter client just received a rather nice update. It might not bring the app all the way up to par with the iPhone version, but we’ll take anything at this point.

To be clear, there’s actually nothing wrong with the Android version of TweetDeck. It’s just that the iPhone version is more aesthetically pleasing. The new update brings a handful of features, and should be able to be installed right over the current version found in the Android Market. If you experience issues after the update, it’s suggested that you uninstall the application, and reinstall the update without the Market version installed. I installed over the current version and have had no issues whatsoever.

The new TweetDeck update brings the following:

Change Log:

  • Landscape mode for all update detail views
  • Added support for Twitpic
  • Manual bit.ly shortening
  • Allow for dismissing Places notification
  • Fix faving tweets on 3g in France
  • Allow old style RTs for protected users
  • Support FB Single Sign On
  • Allow users to delete DMs that are sent to them
  • Likes and comments on FB photos should stay in app
  • Several bug fixes and performance improvements

These enhancements are more than welcome, and definitely offer up some features that can bring it one step closer to becoming a real Twitter competitor in the Android space. But is it enough? At the moment, it’s not for me personally, and I usually have Twidroyd installed as my primary Twitter client. That said, I always have TweetDeck installed and use it regularly.

We’re glad to see landscape compatibility, as well as support for Twitpic, in this version. Still, I’m not sold just yet. I already know that one day TweetDeck will be my primary mobile Twitter client, as it’s already my primary desktop client. But, until it gets some decent widgets, allow for themes and whatnot, it’ll be mostly an option rather than the default.

Grab the new version here.
