The last guess we had at Windows phone sales figures at launch was something in the neighbourhood of 40,000 units, but the number of Windows phone Facebook app users may crank up that minimum to 135,000 after being on the market for a few weeks. Whether you want to decide that the actual sales numbers for Windows phones isn’t much above 135,00 on the assumption that most owners log onto Facebook is your choice, but I would say that there are at least a couple that don’t.
Microsoft has been happy to brag about how many developers they’ve bought, but have been shy about talking about how many devices they’ve moved. Of course, they’re not expecting to necessarily make a big splash, but simply have some presence in as many sales channels as possible and take the long view for maturing the OS. So long as Microsoft maintains that patience and keeps strong relationships with manufacturers, carriers, and third-party app developers, I feel pretty confident for the platform’s future, even if the initial uptake don’t blow anybody’s minds. Maybe that January update will give Windows phone sales a kick in the pants…
