With less than 10 days to go until Christmas, is there someone out there you forgot to buy a present for? Fear not, because Nokia USA is offering the Nokia N8 for only $399. All you have to do is go to nokiausa.com, find the N8, add it to your shopping cart, then use promotion code “noknow2010” to slash $50 off the final price. Are there better smartphones out there? No question, but for $399 you get the best device that currently comes out of Finland. Specifications include a 12 megapixel camera that has been earning praise from both Android and iPhone fanbois alike, Xenon flash so you can use said camera in night time situations, quadband GSM/EDGE and an impressive pentaband 3G antenna so you can get high speed mobile broadband from literally every operator around the world, 3.5 inch screen with your typical Nokia resolution of 640 by 360 pixels, HDMI out, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, compass, 3.5 mm headphone jack, and everything else that makes up a typical high end smartphone.
Nokia have also made a commitment to upgrade the software on the N8 throughout 2011. The Symbian^3 powered device is due to get a new browser, much improved text entry, a more polished implementation of home screens, and hopefully 30 frame per second 720p video recording. That last one is a personal feature request.
Those wanting a QWERTY variant of the N8 will be sad to discover that the E7, which was supposed to ship in time for the holidays, has been delayed to Q1 2011. Some people are saying it’s going to ship as late as March, and considering that it was announced in September of this year, makes things rather awkward.
Want my advice? If you’re on a tight budget, don’t buy this thing. Wait 2 months when all the new phones get announced at Mobile World Congress, and then all of the hot models that are currently selling will get a heavy discount to clear out excess inventory. If you really want the N8 then you should still wait 2 months since that $399 price tag will probably hit $350 or even $299.
