Zynga, GetJar bring Mafia Wars to phones with HTML5

Zynga and GetJar are bringing the popular Mafia Wars game to your smartphone or tablets, as Mafia Wars Atlantic city will be a browser-based game using HTML5.

The Zynga Mafia Wars will be the company’s first game targeted at the mobile browser and it will enable the company to reach the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and webOS crowd in one fell swoop. We know the company is working on iPhone and Android apps but the mobile web version could be cheaper to develop in the long run.

Let’s be honest here, the Zynga games have never been a bastion of great graphics, so the mobile web browser approach makes a lot of sense. We do look forward to the company upping the ante with its mobile games in the future though, as the company recently purchased developer Newtoy.

As for GetJar, this is another big-time get for the independent app store, which already has seen over 1 billion app downloads across multiple platforms. GetJar was the first company to land Angry Birds for Android, although it couldn’t keep up with the demand during those first few hours.
